Children's Diseases - The Calls 1896-1915-1934

Arthur, as a little child, was subject to sudden mysterious attacks of illness, which would frighten his mama almost to death. He would have high fever, and sometimes his stomach would reject all food and then he would gag and retch. He and Edith had the whooping cough when Edith was six or eight months old. Arthur had quite a bad cough, but I never heard him whoop more than once or twice. Edith was very  sick, especially along towards Spring, when she caught more Cold and lay in a stupid condition for days, hardly eating or moving. We had a doctor at last, and he said she might get along, but he had known of a similar case where a child dropped off very suddenly and unexpectedly. he couldn't tell what the outcome would be in her case. She began to improve about that time, and with the help of "emulsion of cod liver oil," she soon became robust again. She was always a very large child. Arthur weight 7 1/2 pounds when he was born, Edith 9 1/2, Robert 8 1/2, and Evelyn 8.

I'm very lucky to have several of my grandmother Evelyn Clara Call's (1895-1962) photo albums. And perhaps even luckier that she labeled many of the photos - so I know roughly when and where they were taken, and who was in the photos.  My grandmother attended Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois in 1915-1916, and then Cornell University in Ithaca, New York from 1916-1919 Pages 141 and 142 have photographs of Evelyn's friends at the Falls in Fall Creek Gorge and canoeing on a lake. There are several photographs of my grandfather in this set.  Page 141 Hankins & McLean Hankins    McLean Hankins - My grandfather, Francis William Hankins (1897-1983), son of William Lucas Hankins (1872-1930) and Mary Jane Kellam (1874-1944). Robert, Baby Pearl - The Calls 1896-1915-1934

None of our children are mischievous as some are but Robert had a season before he was two years old, when he did some funny, and troublesome things. I had agreed to board two young ministers who met at our church for the Conference Class - for about a week. While I was preparing a bedroom for them, little Robert came climbing up the stairs. I had set out the water pitcher so as to take it down to fill, but set it back in a room when Robert came up. In a few minutes, however, i head a rolling crash and found he had put the cloth kitty and puppy in the water pitcher, and had rolled them down stairs.  A few days after, I was very  tired, and when, at last, I had finished dinner dishes, I went and tumbled on the couch almost exhausted. I picked up something to read for once was almost oblivious to any surround. I was soon aroused, however, and found that Robert had taken the hair- brush,   and climbed up into a chair in the kitchen and pounded a full bowl of gravy he had knocked it on the
