Trip to Buttermilk Falls, Ithaca, New York - April 1919 - pages 138-139

I'm very lucky to have several of my grandmother Evelyn Clara Call's (1895-1962) photo albums. And perhaps even luckier that she labeled many of the photos - so I know roughly when and where they were taken, and who was in the photos.  My grandmother attended Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois in 1915-1916, and then Cornell University in Ithaca, New York from 1916-1919 The photos on pages 138-139 have photographs from a trip to Buttermilk Falls in Ithaca that my grandmother (Evelyn Clara Call 1895-1962) and grandfather (Francis William Hankins 1897-1983) took with several of their friends in April 1919.  Page 138 Evelyn Clara Call on left Evelyn Clara Call (1895-1962) daughter of Charles Joslin Call (1859-1939) and Elizabeth Ann Coe (1862-1956). The sixth photograph is Mary Isadore Coe (1851-1924), wife of George W. Sperry, sister of Elizabeth Ann Coe Mary Isadore Coe was born 14 October 1851 in Pavilion, Genesee County, New York, the daughter of Albert Coe (1827-1907) and Deborah Prentice (1833-1910).  When Mary was eleven, she suffered a severe case of the measles. According to The Memories of the Coes written by her sister Elizabeth,  The measles we have particular reason to remember. Mary, who was eleven years older than I, and at the time in school in Le Roy, had them first. Father went to Le Roy, our trading place, and when he got home found with the other mail, a letter saying Mary was sick with the measles at her boarding place in Le Roy. He hitched the horses to the sleigh and went back the five mile and a half, to bring her home. She was never well after that. (Memories of the Coes,  https://pattyhankins.blogspot.com/2020/07/memories-of-coes-1-introduction.html ) Mary received her education at the Le Roy Academy and

February 1896 - Children Learning to Walk, Evelyn's First Words - The Calls 1896-1915-1934

Family Record February 1896. The 16th, the thermometer stood 20° below here at Grandpa Call's between 6 and 7 o'clock in the morning. Papa said that was the lowest he ever knew it. There was almost no wind and it didn't seem so cold.  Evelyn was one year old Wednesday the 12th. She weighs 22 pounds. She has stood alone for quite a while, but doesn't walk yet. When she first began to stand alone; she would stand up and then settle in a kind of curtsey then up again, very prettily. Arthur lacked a week of a year when he took his first step alone. Edith was two weeks over a year, but she was large and heavy. His papa coaxed Robert to take his first step alone the day he was ten months old and he was running all around long before he was eleven months.  Feb 29. Evelyn took a few steps alone the day she was one year and two weeks old, just Edith's age. We have had continuous sleighing now for six or seven weeks. It is very poor now, high banks and bare ground alternating

The Calls - 1896-1915-1934

On February 16, 1896, my great grandmother, Elizabeth Ann Coe (1862-1956), wife of Charles Joslin Call (1859-1939) of Stafford, Genesee County, New York, began writing what she called a family record. She wrote about her children, how she met her husband, why they had moved to Kansas for several years, etc She continued to write in the Family Record on and off, in fits and starts for the next 25 years. Sometimes she would write several pages, and then put it down for a few years, and pick it up and write some more. Other times, she would go years without writing, and then glue in some letters or newspaper clippings.  So unlike the  Memories of the Calls ,  the Memories of the Coes , or  The Call 1935-1943  - which look back on her life and her husband's life from a later vantage point, this one is written contemporaneously with the events she wrote about.  The manuscript gives me a glimpse into what life was like in the late nineteenth century and first years of the twentieth ce

Mary Jane Kellam's Birthday Book

Image
On Christmas day, 1888, Mary Jane Kellam (1874-1944), daughter of John Ross Kellam (1830-1903) and Frances Maria Shafter (1845-1924), was given a copy of Tennyson's Birthday Book by her Auntie Davis.  Mary Jane - usually known as Mame or Mamie - began recording birthday's of friends and families. She continued to add information to the book until the late 1920s. Mamie clearly asked when people's birthday, year of birth and a location - because she included it in this wonderful record she left.  Given the scarcity of vital records for Sullivan County, New York, where she was born and raised, Mame's birthday book is one of the few sources I've found that has exact birthdates for many in the Kellam, Hankins, Ross and Shafer families.  My plan for sharing the information contained in the Birthday Book is to photograph all the pages that she wrote on, and share them by month, with what information I can find about people to help other's find this resource.  Next Po

The fifth photograph is George W. Sperry (1853-1933), husband of Mary Isadore Coe, brother-in-law of Elizabeth Ann Coe George W. Sperry was born on June 29, 1853 in Pavilion, Genesee County, New York, the son of Platt T. Sperry (1814-1889) and Rebecca Storm (1821-1857). He married Mary Isadore Coe (1851-1924), daughter of Albert Coe (1827-1907) and Deborah Prentice (1833-1910) on May 7, 1879 in Le Roy. According to census records, George was a farmer in Pavilion until after 1900. In 1910, George and Mary were living in Benton, Lake County, Illinois, where George's occupation was listed as house painter. In 1920, they lived in Zion, Lake County, where George had no occupation listed, although the 1919 city directory does list his occupation as painter. In 1930, George, by then a widow, was living in Elyria, Lorain County, Ohio, where he died on October 10, 1933.  There is very little information on the photograph that helps date it to a specific timeframe, but I believe the photog
