Henrietta A. Crandall born 1 January 1847 in Bainbridge, Chenango County, New York, daughter of Orasums Crandall (1808-1869) and Betsey Ann Carroll (1809-1876). She married Chauncey E Tolles (1831-1880) and  Frank Buckley (1840-1917) in 1886. She died 29 May 1912 in Middletown, Orange County, New York. 



January 4 - Janet A Lindsay - West Pittston, PA

Janet Anderson Lindsay was born 4 January 1875 in Pittston, Luzerne County, Pennsylvania, the daughter of  James Lindsay and Margaret Schultz (1849-1919). She married Stanley Turrell Glidden (1874-1938) in 1910. She died on 9 November 1921 in West Pittston, Luzerne County, Pennsylvania. 




January 11 - Mary C Marx - Andes, NY

Mary C Marx was born 11 January 1869, the daughter of Simon Marx (1832-1907) and Sarah Hawver (1838-1912). She died unmarried on 19 April 1957. She appears to have lived in Andes, Delaware County, New York her entire life. 

January 12, 1847 - C.M. Hill, Binghampton, NY

January 15 - Herbert McCabe, Andes, NY, Hattie Bruce, Andes, NY, Terence W. Gilbert, Auburn, NY

Herbert Robert McCabe was born 15 January 1875, possibly the son of Levi B. McCabe (1838-1888) and Sarah C Shaver (1832-1900). In 1892, Sarah McCabe was living in Andes, Delaware County, New York, with Lena born about 1873 and Herbert born about 1875. Herbert Robert McCabe's World War I draft registration shows him born on 15 January 1875, with his closest relative Helena McCabe of Kingston, New York. If he was the son of Levi McCabe and Sarah Shaver, then he was Mary Jane Kellam's maternal first cousin. I have found no documentation confirming the hypothesis that Herbert McCabe was Levi McCabe's son. 

Hattie Bruce - Harriet "Hattie" Bell Bruce was born 15 January 1871, the daughter of James Bruce (1831-1912) and  Mary Linn (1830-1907). Census records have the family in Andes, Delaware County, New York through 1940. Hattie married Albert Armstrong (1871-1939) in 1906. She died on 20 September 1954 in Margaretville, Delaware County, New York. 

Terence W Gilbert was born 15 January 1882 in New York, the son of Almeron Gilbert (1855-????) and Mary Ward (1860-1929). He lived in Auburn, Cayuga County, New York from at least 1926 - 1940, working as a florist. He died on 4 June 1941 Mary Jane Kellam and her husband William Lucas Hankins lived in Auburn for many years. 


January 17 - Laura Schiyver - Brunswick, Ga, Grace Tiffany, Hop Bottom, Pa

I have not been able to idenitify Laura Schiyver 

Grace Pearl Tiffany was born 17 January 1875 in Hop Bottom, Susquehanna, Pennsylvania, the daughter of Edson Manning Tiffany (1841-1912) and Mary Elizabeth Miles (1845-1888). She married Edwin W Merrill (1870-1918) in 1895. She died on 29 October 1934 in Binghamton, Broome County, New York. 



January 23 - Alexander Kellam, Ridgeway, Pa, 1836, Marr Joal   T. Hill, Pa, 1848

Alexander Clark Kellam was born 23 January 1836 in Manchester, Wayne County, Pennsylvania, the son of John Kellam (1787-1874) and Jane Ross (1801-1856). He married Julia Augusta Niles (1837-1920) in 1870. Alexander died on 16 March 1914, Ridgeway, Elk County, Pennsylvania. He was the younger brother of John Ross Kellam, Mary Jane Kellam's father.

January 26 - Aunt Fanny Shafer, Kingston, NY

Aunt Fanny Shafer is probably Jane Frances Cornell born 26 January 1837 in New York. She married Colonel Benedict Shafer (1827-1909), uncle of Mary Jane Kellam in 1859. She died on October 18, 1900 in Kingston, Ulster County, New York. Of Mary Jane Kellam's Shafer Aunts - only Jane Frances Cornell has a name that might be abbreviated as Fanny, the only one born in January, and she lived in Kingston, New York. 


January 30 - Harriet M. Bogenrief, Mifflinburg, Pa

Harriet Bogenrief was born 30 January 1875 in Mifflinburg, Union County, Pennsylvania, the daughter of Thomas Bogenrief (1844-1925) and Mary Meyes (1844-????). She married John Calvin Prettyleaf (1880-1943). She died on 18 August 1960 in Elizabethtown, Lancaster, Pennsylvania.

   I recently received a set of recipe cards from a cousin that were written by out grandmother Evelyn Clara (Call) Hankins, probably between 1920 (when she married) and 1962 (when she died). My grandmother was born in Wichita, Sedgewick, Kansas in 1895. Within a few months of her birth, the family moved back to Stafford, Genesee County, New York where her parents, Charles Joslin Call (1859-1939) and Elizabeth Ann Coe (1862-1956) were born. Evelyn lived in Stafford on the family farm until she left for college, first at Northwestern University in Chicago and then at Cornell University in Ithaca, New York. She graduated from Cornell in 1919 with a degree in Home Economics. After graduating, she worked for a year at Wells College in Aurora, Cayuga, New York, possibly as the Superintendent of a Dormitory, as a housekeeper or as a teacher.   The fifteenth photo in the album is Mary Ellen (Ross) Hankins (1835-1914), wife of Lucas Wurtz Hankins.  Mary Ellen Ross was born 25 August 1835 in Pennsylvania, the daughter of John Ross (1791-1837) and Sarah Kellam (1797-after 1850). She married Lucas Wurtz Hankins (1831-1910), son of John Hankins (1803-1847) and Susan Thomas (1811-1885) on 5 August 1857 at the home of Benjamin Tyler. Lucas and Mary Ellen had three children: Laura Ardella (1858-1859) Howard Ross (1863-1922) married first Emma M. Adding a Citation to a Document using Photoshop Elements 2023

This is the first is an occasional series of blog posts on using Photoshop Elements 2023 for genealogists. Many of my genealogist friends know I'm also a photographer, so have asked me how I do some things with genealogy-related images. The problem is - I use Photoshop and Lightroom - which are probably overkill for most genealogists, and are a subscription-based package. I used to recommend Irfanview (and still do for some things) but I was finding it hard to do some of what I do in Photoshop in Irfanview.  So enter Photoshop Elements 2023 - it has more features than Irfanview but isn't as user-hostile as Photoshop can be. And it's available for purchase as a stand-alone package - no monthly subscription fees!
