Hankins - Ross Photo Album from the 1860s and 1870s

The oldest complete photo album in my family looks to date from the 1860s-1870s and probably belonged to my great great grandparents Lucas Wurtz Hankins (1831-1910) and Mary Ellen Ross (1835-1914). 

Thirty-eight of the forty photographs in the album are identified. Most of the people were closely related to my great great grandparents, and lived in either Sullivan County, New York or Wayne County, Pennsylvania.

 The album has been in the family since it was created. Mary Ellen Ross moved in with her son William Lucas Hankins (1872-1930) and his family after her husband died in 1910. After William Lucas Hankins' death, his widow, Mary Jane Kellam moved in with her son, my grandfather,  Francis William Hankins (1897-1983) and his family. In the 1960s, my grandfather gave some of the family photos albums to my father Philip Charles Hankins (1933-2006), and my father inherited the rest after his father died. Since about 2000, I have taken possession of the family photograph collection, and am in the process of digitizing and sharing it. 

The album and photographs are in surprisingly good condition considering its age. The photographs themselves are sealed between the pages, so if there is information on the backs of photographs, it is inaccessible. Most of the photographs are labeled. It is unknown who added the identifications. They could well date from when the album was created in the 1860s and 1870s.

My Grandmother's Recipes - Sandwiches

   I recently received a set of recipe cards from a cousin that were written by out grandmother Evelyn Clara (Call) Hankins, probably between 1920 (when she married) and 1962 (when she died). My grandmother was born in Wichita, Sedgewick, Kansas in 1895. Within a few months of her birth, the family moved back to Stafford, Genesee County, New York where her parents, Charles Joslin Call (1859-1939) and Elizabeth Ann Coe (1862-1956) were born. Evelyn lived in Stafford on the family farm until she left for college, first at Northwestern University in Chicago and then at Cornell University in Ithaca, New York. She graduated from Cornell in 1919 with a degree in Home Economics. Mary Ellen (Ross) Hankins (1835-1914)

  The fifteenth photo in the album is Mary Ellen (Ross) Hankins (1835-1914), wife of Lucas Wurtz Hankins.  Mary Ellen Ross was born 25 August 1835 in Pennsylvania, the daughter of John Ross (1791-1837) and Sarah Kellam (1797-after 1850). She married Lucas Wurtz Hankins (1831-1910), son of John Hankins (1803-1847) and Susan Thomas (1811-1885) on 5 August 1857 at the home of Benjamin Tyler. Lucas and Mary Ellen had three children: Laura Ardella (1858-1859) Howard Ross (1863-1922) married first Emma M. Adding a Citation to a Document using Photoshop Elements 2023

This is the first is an occasional series of blog posts on using Photoshop Elements 2023 for genealogists. Many of my genealogist friends know I'm also a photographer, so have asked me how I do some things with genealogy-related images. The problem is - I use Photoshop and Lightroom - which are probably overkill for most genealogists, and are a subscription-based package. I used to recommend Irfanview (and still do for some things) but I was finding it hard to do some of what I do in Photoshop in Irfanview.  So enter Photoshop Elements 2023 - it has more features than Irfanview but isn't as user-hostile as Photoshop can be.
