Colonel Zalmon Smith Main


The fourth photograph in the album is Colonel Zalmon Smith Main - brother-in-law of Lucas Wurtz Hankins.

Zalmon Smith Main was born 2 August 1833 in Liberty, Sullivan County, New York, the son of William Pitt Main (1806-1889) and Eliza Middlebrook (1805-1836). On 29 March 1864, he married Mary Hankins (1833-1907), daughter of John Hankins (1803-1847) and Susan Thomas (1811-1885) at Hankins, Sullivan County. They had one daughter, Florence Eliza (1866-1940), who married William Albert Martin (1866-1937). 

Zalmon Smith Main served in the Union Army throughout the Civil War. He enlisted on 20 October 1861 as a Captain in Company A, 52nd Indiana Infantry Regiment. He was promoted to Major on 14 May 1862, Lt. Colonel on 4 June 1862, and Colonel on 1 April 1865. He mustered out of the Army in Alabama on 10 September 1865. 

He died on 13 October 1867 at Hankins, and is buried at Overlook Cemetery in Damascus, Wayne County, Pennsylvania.
