Charles Akers Johnson (1840-1893)

 


The thirty-fourth photograph in the album is Charles Akers Johnson (1840-1893), brother-in-law of Lucas Wurtz Hankins. 

Charles Akers Johnson was born 4 June 1840 in Jamestown, Mercer County, Pennsylvania. He married Angeline Elizabeth Hankins (18383-1903), daughter of John Hankins (1803-1847) and Susan Thomas (1811-1885) on 8 July 1873 at Hankins, Sullivan County, New York. He died on 22 December 1893 in Washington, D.C. and is buried in Arlington National Cemetery, Arlington, Virginia. 

Charles Akers Johnson spent much of his adult life in military service. On 20 April 1861, he enlisted Company B, Wisconsin's First Infantry Division. He served until 22 Feb 1865, when he completed his service in Company I, Wisconsin's 51st Infantry Company as a Second Lieutenant. In August 1867, he was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in the U.S. Army, serving until 1892, when he retired as a Captain.
