Susan Thomas Hankins

The first photograph in the album is Susan (Thomas) Hankins (1811-1885), mother of Lucas Wurtz Hankins. 

Susan Thomas was born 25 February 1811 in Damascus, Wayne County, Pennsylvania. the daughter of Moses Thomas III (1777-1857) and Rebecca Monnington (1782-1841). She married John Hankins (1803-1847) on 4 March 1830 at her parents' homestead, two miles south of Damascus. He was the son of Ralph Hankins (1776-1863) and Mary Dougherty. 

John and Susan (Thomas) Hankins had eight children:

  • Lucas Wurtz (1831-1910) married Mary Ellen Ross (1835-1914)
  • Mary (1833-1907) married Zalmon Smith Main (1833-1867)
  • Rebecca Thomas (1835-1918)
  • Angeline Elizabeth (1838-1903) married Charles Akers Johnson (1840-1893)
  • Susan Abigail (1841-1917) married David Tyler Bush (1838-1876)
  • John Ralph (1843-1905) married Emma A Buckley (1849-1934)
  • William Thomas (1845-1847)
  • Samuel Howard (1848-1917) married Lillian Celestia Waite (1853-1915)
After her husband's death in 1847, Susan continued to raise her children in Hankins, Sullivan County, New York. She died at Hankins on 30 August 1885. Both she and her husband are buried in Overlook Cemetery in Damascus.
