Early 1900s Call Album - Page 34

Sometime in about 1904, someone in my grandmother Evelyn Clara Call's (1895-1962) family started taking photographs and placing them in an album. My grandmother was nine in 1904, so she could have been the photographer. Or it could have been one of her parents Charles Joslin Call (1859-1939) or Elizabeth Ann (Coe) Call (1861-1956). Most of the early photographs are of family gatherings and places someone visited. I believe by about 1911, my grandmother was taking the photographs. There are photos of her classmates at Batavia High School and groups of teenage girls. 

The Call family live in Stafford, Genesee County, New York. They had a cottage at Silver Lake in Wyoming County. So many of the photos were taken in these locations. 

Based on the ages of the children - these photos were likely taken around 1911.  


Helen Elizabeth Call

Helen Elizabeth Call was born 1 July 1910 in Schenectady. Schenectady County, New York, the daughter of Charles Arthur Call (1885-1962) and Bertha May Hotchkiss (1882-1946). She married Robert Wilson Johnson (1910-1991), son of Harry Johnson (1884-1940) and Mary Sipko (1891-1965). Helen died on 16 January 1997  in Bangor, Penobscot County, Maine. 

Helen Elizabeth Call, Charles Arthur Call

Charles Arthur Call, son of Charles Joslin Call (1859-1939) and Elizabeth Ann (Coe) Call (1862-1956) was born 8 October 1885 in Stafford, Genesee County, New York. He married Bertha May Hotchkiss (11 April 1882-19 July 19446) on 28 July 1909 in Gainesville, Wyoming County, New York. He later married Anna Frances Meyer (9 December 1886-25 February 1971) on 5 July 1947. Charles Arthur Call died on 1 August 1962 at Niagara Falls, Niagara County, New York.

Bertha May Hotchkiss was born 11 April 1882 in Arcade, Wyoming County, New York, the daughter of Horatio Nelson Hotchkiss (1855-1938) and Carrie Adell VanName (1861-1944). She married Charles Arthur Call (1885-1962) son of Charles Joslin Call (1859-1939) and Elizabeth Ann Coe (1862-1956) on 28 July 1909 in Gainesville, Wyoming County. Bertha died on 19 July 1946 at Niagara Falls, Niagara County, New York. 

Marion Amelia Call was born 26 June 1911 in Schenectady, Schenectady County, New York, the daughter of Charles Arthur Call (1885-1962) and Bertha May Hotchkiss (1882-1946). She married John Kay Strickland (1911-2007), son of Edwin I. Strickland (1878-1972) and Mary E. Kay (1880-1973) on 8 June 1940 in New York City. Marion died on 15 February 2000 in Austin, Travis County, Texas.

Irving Joslyn Call, Helen Elizabeth Call 

Irving Joslyn Call was born 21 July 1900 in Stafford, son of Charles Joslin Call (1859-1939) and Elizabeth Ann Coe (1862-1956). He married Thelma Louise Keitel (1905-1996) on 22 June 1926 in Albion, Orleans, New York. He 
died 30 December 1995 in Stafford.

Sometimes digital images of documents are just hard to read – the paper is gray, the ink close to the same color, and often with ink bleeding through from the back. Brightening up the document and sharpening up the words can sometimes make it easier to read  and hopefully find the clue that helps you break through a brick wall. Sometimes it just takes a couple of minutes in Photoshop or Photoshop Elements to clean it up. The steps are the same – just the commands and menus are in different places. Combining Two USGS Topographical Maps in Photoshop Elements 2023

Sometimes when you are working with USGS Topographical Maps, the area you’re interested in on the border of two maps, which can make it harder to get an understanding of the topography. The solution is to combine the two maps into one. Usually, I’d just use photo merging or panoramic software to created the merged map. But since there is no overlap between USGS maps – that won’t work. I have to do it by hand. Here's one way to do it in Photoshop Elements 2023 1. Open both maps in Photoshop Elements. Make sure you know how the maps should align so you know where to place them in your combined document. 2. Crop both maps to edges of the map. Make sure to write down the info in the corners so you geo-reference your combined map in other software.  Save your cropped maps under a different name File > Save As   3.
