Early 1900s Call Album - Page 47

 Sometime in about 1904, someone in my grandmother Evelyn Clara Call's (1895-1962) family started taking photographs and placing them in an album. My grandmother was nine in 1904, so she could have been the photographer. Or it could have been one of her parents Charles Joslin Call (1859-1939) or Elizabeth Ann (Coe) Call (1861-1956). Most of the early photographs are of family gatherings and places someone visited. I believe by about 1911, my grandmother was taking the photographs. There are photos of her classmates at Batavia High School and groups of teenage girls. 

The Call family live in Stafford, Genesee County, New York. They had a cottage at Silver Lake in Wyoming County. So many of the photos were taken in these locations. 

The photos on this page date from 1912, and were likely taken in LeRoy, Genesee County, New York at the home of Frank Lincoln Walkley and Carrie Evelyn (Coe) Walkley - my grandmother's aunt and uncle. 



Frank Lincoln Walkley and Carrie Evelyn (Coe) Walkley had five sons. These may well be them. I don't have enough positively identified photographs of them to be sure, I don't recognize the woman in the photo. Assuming these are the five Walkley boys, they are:

Fred Rosman Walkley, born 18 May 1895 in LeRoy, Genesee County, New York, son of Frank Lincoln Walkley (1867-1961) and Carrie Evelyn Coe (1864-1946). He married Marjorie Doris Aldrich (1896-1973), daughter of Clark Mason Aldrich (1875-1962) and Glennie Lois Shattuck (1875-1928) on 20 June 1918 in Castile, Wyoming County, New York. He later married Norma Eiseman (1912-2004) on 8 August 1953, in Perry, Wyoming County, New York. Fred died 8 April 1981 in Osceola, Florida. 

Albert Coe Walkley, born 4 October 1896 in LeRoy, Genesee County, New York, son of Frank Lincoln Walkley (1867-1961) and Carrie Evelyn Coe (1864-1946). He married Jane Conning Donnan (1899-1979), daughter of Nathan Wells Donnan (1862-1952) and Elizabeth Robinson (1870-1943).  on 30 June 1927 in Schenectady, Schenectady New York. He died 24 May 1983 in Crawfordsville, Montgomery County, Illinois. 

Clarence Williard Walkley, born 12 July 1898 in LeRoy, Genesee County, New York, son of Frank Lincoln Walkley (1867-1961) and Carrie Evelyn Coe (1864-1946). He married Doris Donnan (1897-1957), daughter of William Cowan Donnan (1853-1916) and Susan C. Freeman (1868-1951) on 4 May1921 in Mill Valley, Mann County, California. He died on 22 August 1983 in Sonoma, California. 

Frank Floyd Walkley, born 26 June 1900 in LeRoy, Genesee County, New York, son of Frank Lincoln Walkley (1867-1961) and Carrie Evelyn Coe (1864-1946). He married Mildred Emma Brock (1907-2002), daughter of John Monroe Brock (1882-1969( and Ester Pearl Cresey (1885-1960),  on 8 Jun 1935 in Winchester, Frederick County, Virginia. He died on 14 April 1981 in Lake County, Florida. 

James Harry Walkley, born 5 August 1903 in LeRoy, Genesee County, New York, son of Frank Lincoln Walkley (1867-1961) and Carrie Evelyn Coe (1864-1946). He married Katherine Louise Persell (1905-1957), daughter of George Albert Persell (1871-1953) on 9 March 1929 in Jamestown, Chautauqua County, New York. He married Ruth L. Lawrence (1901-1982), daughter of Charles R Lawrence (1862 - ) and Emma P (1866 - ) on 5 October 1947 in Union County, New York. He married Christine Holt (1952 - ) on 2 May 1983 in Pinellas County, Florida. He died 10 February 1985 in Pinellas County, Florida.

Evelyn Clara Call, daughter of Charles Joslin Call (1859-1939) and Elizabeth Ann Coe (1862-1956) was born 12 February 1895 in Wichita, Sedgwick County, Kansas. She married Francis William Hankins (8 September 1897 - 9 October 1983) on 31 December 1920 in Stafford. She died on 10 June 1962 in Philadelphia, Philadelphia County, Pennsylvania.

Frank Lincoln Walkley was born 9 June 1867 in Pavilion, Genesee County, New York, son of Rosman L Walkley (1838-1930) and Maryetta Peck (1843-1922). He married Carrie Evelyn Coe (1864-1948), daughter of Albert Coe (1827-1907) and Deborah Prentice (1833-1910) on 21 June 1894 in LeRoy, Genesee County, New York. He died 13 July 1961 in Wyoming County, New York. 

Carrie Evelyn Coe was born 10  November 1864 in Pavilion, Genesee County, New York, daughter of Albert Coe (1827-1907) and Deborah Prentice (1833-1910). She married Frank Lincoln Walkley (1867-1961), son of Rosman L Walkley (1838-1930) and Maryetta Pect (1843-1922) on 21 June 1894 in LeRoy, Genesee County, New York. She died 5 August 1948 in LeRoy, Genesee County, New York.

Brightening Up A Hard to Read Document in Photoshop or Photoshop Elements

Sometimes digital images of documents are just hard to read – the paper is gray, the ink close to the same color, and often with ink bleeding through from the back. Brightening up the document and sharpening up the words can sometimes make it easier to read  and hopefully find the clue that helps you break through a brick wall. Sometimes it just takes a couple of minutes in Photoshop or Photoshop Elements to clean it up. The steps are the same – just the commands and menus are in different places. So here are directions for both – I’m using Photoshop 2025 and Photoshop Elements 2023 on a Windows machine. I don’t know the commands on the MAC and don’t have an updated version of Photoshop Elements – so hopefully you can figure it out if my directions don’t match what you see on the screen.
