Early 1900s Call Album - Page 49

Sometime in about 1904, someone in my grandmother Evelyn Clara Call's (1895-1962) family started taking photographs and placing them in an album. My grandmother was nine in 1904, so she could have been the photographer. Or it could have been one of her parents Charles Joslin Call (1859-1939) or Elizabeth Ann (Coe) Call (1861-1956). Most of the early photographs are of family gatherings and places someone visited. I believe by about 1911, my grandmother was taking the photographs. There are photos of her classmates at Batavia High School and groups of teenage girls. 

The Call family live in Stafford, Genesee County, New York. They had a cottage at Silver Lake in Wyoming County. So many of the photos were taken in these locations. 

The middle two photographs on the page date from before April 1907. The top two were likely taken at the Call family home in Stafford, Genesee County, New York. 




Elizabeth Ann (Coe) Call 

Elizabeth Ann Coe was born 8 October 1862 in Pavilion, Genesee, New York, daughter of Albert Coe (1827-1907) and Deborah Prentice (1833-1910). She married Charles Joslin Call (1859-1939) on 5 November 1884 in Stafford. She died 3 November 1956 in Zephyrhills, Pasco, Florida. 


Charles Joslin Call 


Charles Joslin Call was born 28 March 1859 in Stafford, Genesee County, New York,  the son of Robert Call (1831-1913) and Charlotte Joslin (1834-1908).  He married Elizabeth Ann Coe (1862-1956) on 5 November 1884 in LeRoy, Genesee, New York. He died 12 June 1939 in Stafford. 

Frank Lincoln Walkley, Charles Joslin Call, Ezra Frank Coe, Albert Coe 

Frank Lincoln Walkley was born 9 June 1867 in Pavilion, Genesee County, New York, son of Rosman L Walkley (1838-1930) and Maryetta Peck (1843-1922). He married Carrie Evelyn Coe (1864-1948), daughter of Albert Coe (1827-1907) and Deborah Prentice (1833-1910) on 21 June 1894 in LeRoy, Genesee County, New York. He died 13 July 1961 in Wyoming County, New York. 

Ezra Frank Coe was born 26 December 1853 in Pavilion, Genesee County, New York, son of Albert Coe (1827-1907) and Deborah Prentice (1833-1910). He married Sarah Frances Ward ((1856-1942), daughter of Charles Kendall Ward (1819-1898) and Laura Caroline Davenport (1822-1876) on 7 November 1883 in Pavilion. He died 6 January 1942 in Tampa, Hillsborough County, Florida. 

Albert Coe was born 17 February 1827 in Covington, Genesee County, New York, the son of Ezra Coe (1796-1869) and Elizabeth Ann Sornberger (1795-1887). He married Deborah Prentice (1833-1910) on 31 December 1850 in Pavilion, Genesee County, New York. He died 26 April 1907 in LeRoy, Genesee County, New York.

Carrie Evelyn Coe was born 10  November 1864 in Pavilion, Genesee County, New York, daughter of Albert Coe (1827-1907) and Deborah Prentice (1833-1910). She married Frank Lincoln Walkley (1867-1961), son of Rosman L Walkley (1838-1930) and Maryetta Peck (1843-1922) on 21 June 1894 in LeRoy, Genesee County, New York. She died 5 August 1948 in LeRoy, Genesee County, New York. 

Sarah Frances Ward was born 6 January 1856 in Pavilion, Genesee County, New York, daughter of Charles Kendall Ward (1819-1898) and Laura Caroline Davenport (1822-1876). She married Ezra Frank Coe (1853-1942) on 7 November 1883 in Pavilion. She died 7 January 1942 in Tampa, Hillsborough County, Florida. 

Deborah Prentice was born 4 April 1833 in Franklindale, Bradford County, Pennsylvania, daughter of Southwick Prentice (1800-1876) and Elizabeth 
Ann (Betsy) Smith (1802-1846). She married Albert Coe (1827-1907) on 31 December 1850 in Pavilion, Genesee County, New York. She died 5 November 1910 in LeRoy, Genesee County, New York.

Brightening Up A Hard to Read Document in Photoshop or Photoshop Elements

Sometimes digital images of documents are just hard to read – the paper is gray, the ink close to the same color, and often with ink bleeding through from the back. Brightening up the document and sharpening up the words can sometimes make it easier to read  and hopefully find the clue that helps you break through a brick wall. Sometimes it just takes a couple of minutes in Photoshop or Photoshop Elements to clean it up. The steps are the same – just the commands and menus are in different places. So here are directions for both – I’m using Photoshop 2025 and Photoshop Elements 2023 on a Windows machine. I don’t know the commands on the MAC and don’t have an updated version of Photoshop Elements – so hopefully you can figure it out if my directions don’t match what you see on the screen.
