Early 1900s Call Album - page 65

  Sometime in about 1904, someone in my grandmother Evelyn Clara Call's (1895-1962) family started taking photographs and placing them in an album. My grandmother was nine in 1904, so she could have been the photographer. Or it could have been one of her parents Charles Joslin Call (1859-1939) or Elizabeth Ann (Coe) Call (1861-1956). Most of the early photographs are of family gatherings and places someone visited. I believe by about 1911, my grandmother was taking the photographs. There are photos of her classmates at Batavia High School and groups of teenage girls. 

The Call family live in Stafford, Genesee County, New York. They had a cottage at Silver Lake in Wyoming County. So many of the photos were taken in these locations.

Edith Alberta Call and Malvern Smith Jones

Edith Alberta Call, daughter of Charles Joslin Call (1859-1939) and Elizabeth Ann (Coe) Call (1862-1956) was born 5 June 1889 in Wichita, Sedgwick County, Kansas. She married Malvern Smith Jones (1884-1937) on 26 June 1913 in Stafford. She later married Cary Clinton Daniels (1878-1970) on 29 September 1945 in Stafford. She died on 23 November 1989 in Raleigh, Wake County, North Carolina 

Malvern Smith Jones, son of Daniel Southard Jones (1853-1923) and Ida May Gardiner (1856-1892) was born 5 February 1884 in Kortwright, Delaware County, New York, He married Edith Alberta Call (1889-1989) on 26 June 1913 at Stafford, Genesee County, New York. He died on 8 February 1837 in Schenectady, Schenectady County, New York.

Robert Vincent Call was born 4 December 1892 in Wichita, son of Charles Joslin Call (1859-1939) and Elizabeth Ann Coe (1862-1956). He married Lucille Alice Hale (1893-1996) on 1 January 1919 in Fayetteville, Onondaga, New York. He died 9 July 1961 in Batavia. 

Evelyn Clara Call, daughter of Charles Joslin Call (1859-1939) and Elizabeth Ann Coe (1862-1956) was born 12 February 1895 in Wichita, Sedgwick County, Kansas. She married Francis William Hankins (1897 - 1983) on 31 December 1920 in Stafford. She died on 10 June 1962 in Philadelphia, Philadelphia County, Pennsylvania.

Marion Amelia Call was born 26 June 1911 in Schenectady, Schenectady County, New York, the daughter of Charles Arthur Call (1885-1962) and Bertha May Hotchkiss (1882-1946). She married John Kay Strickland (1911-2007), son of Edwin I. Strickland (1878-1972) and Mary E. Kay (1880-1973) on 8 June 1940 in New York City. Marion died on 15 February 2000 in Austin, Travis County, Texas.

Helen Elizabeth Call was born 1 July 1910 in Schenectady. Schenectady County, New York, the daughter of Charles Arthur Call (1885-1962) and Bertha May Hotchkiss (1882-1946). She married Robert Wilson Johnson (1910-1991), son of Harry Johnson (1884-1940) and Mary Sipko (1891-1965). Helen died on 16 January 1997  in Bangor, Penobscot County, Maine.

Brightening Up A Hard to Read Document in Photoshop or Photoshop Elements

Sometimes digital images of documents are just hard to read – the paper is gray, the ink close to the same color, and often with ink bleeding through from the back. Brightening up the document and sharpening up the words can sometimes make it easier to read  and hopefully find the clue that helps you break through a brick wall. Sometimes it just takes a couple of minutes in Photoshop or Photoshop Elements to clean it up. The steps are the same – just the commands and menus are in different places. So here are directions for both – I’m using Photoshop 2025 and Photoshop Elements 2023 on a Windows machine. I don’t know the commands on the MAC and don’t have an updated version of Photoshop Elements – so hopefully you can figure it out if my directions don’t match what you see on the screen.
