Memories of the Calls 22 - A Few Items Not Covered Elsewhere

In regard to Call family history, I find a few items not covered elsewhere. Grandfather's and grandmother's family lived in Devonshire, England. They were nearly all farmers, but Robert Joslin for a time a shoemaker with apprentices. One of Grace Payne Call's brothers, William Payne settled in Stafford. Robert Call was the younger child of six children.

Robert Call landed at Philadelphia March 22, 1853. He went to Boston and worked mostly as a gardener for five years. William Joslin came with him. The next year, Charlotte and Ann Joslin, also Miss Blackmore, the lady who became William Joslin's wife and her sister came. Robert Call and Charlotte were married July 15, 1854.

Patty's notes on this entry

Robert Call's family was from a village called Zeal Monachorum. The Call family first appears in the parish records in the 1680s, and the family lived there until a few years before Robert was born. His next oldest sister Elizabeth was born in Zeal Monachorum in 1824. Robert was born in Chawleigh in 1831.

Charlotte Joslin's family came from the village of Chittlehampton. They first appear in the parish registers in Chittlehampton in the 1770's, prior to that the family was in King's Nympton.

Robert Call's mother was Grace Paine (or Pain or Payne). Her mother was Mary Paine (abt 1762 - 1834). Grace was born about 1788 in Burrington based on census records. I have not yet found a baptismal record for her. William Paine, base child of Mary, was baptised on Jan 2, 1803 at Burrington. He listed in the baptismal register immediately following Mary Joslin, daughter of Henry & Mary. Mary Paine and Henry Joslin were married on June 22, 1802 in Bideford. So as far as I can tell, Mary Paine had two children Grace (Robert Call's mother) and William with unknown fathers, married Henry Joslin and then had a daughter Mary. She had her two youngest children, William Paine and Mary Joslin baptised the same day.

William Paine married Elizabeth Paddon in Burrington on March 25, 1823. They immigrated to the United States in 1835 arriving in New York on May 18 on the Brig Ebenezer. They settled in Genesee County, New York  by 1839, when they purchased land from Richard Babbage. William and Elizabeth eventually settled in Stafford, where Elizabeth died in 1865 and William died in 1882.

John Call (1788-1872) married Grace Pain (abt 1788-1862) on March 15, 1812 at Zeal Monachorum. They had six children:
Mary Call (1813-1878) married John Downing
Ann Call (1815 - 1895) married William Maynard
John Paine Call (1817-1895)  married Jane Goddard. John immigrated in 1866, his wife and nine of their ten children followed in 1868. They settled in Batavia, Genesee, New York.
William Call (1820-1905) immigrated with Robert Call in 1853. He married Sarah Thrush and settled first in Wisconsin, then Minnesota.
Elizabeth Call (1824-1898) married Thomas Radford Smith
Robert Call (1831-1913) immigrated in 1853. He married Charlotte Joslin and settled in Stafford, Genesee County, New York.

Robert Call arrived in Philadelphia on March 22, 1853 on the City of Glasgow. I believe the family tradition that he traveled with William Joslin, Charlotte's brother to be incorrect. On the 1853 passenger list, Robert is listed immediately after William Call. I believe that to be his brother William not Charlotte's brother William Joslin listed with the wrong last name.

I have not found William Call's naturalization papers, which would list his date of arrival. According to the 1900 census, he immigrated in 1860. However, his oldest child was born in Wisconsin in 1859 and he is listed as living in Columbia County, Wisconsin in 1860.

William Joslin, Charlotte's brother, arrived in Boston on March 27, 1852 according to his naturalization papers.

Charlotte and her sister Ann Joslin, Charlotte and her sister Jennie Blackmore all arrived in Boston on the ship Medium on May 31 1854. The Joslin sisters are listed at the bottom of one page, while the Blackmore sisters are at the top of the next on the ship's passenger list.

Robert Call and Charlotte Joslin were married on July 16 1854 in Fitchburg, Massachusetts.

William Joslin married Charlote Blackmore on December 24, 1856 in Chelsea, Massachusetts. Ann Joslin married William Jones on July 2, 1858 in Chelsea.
