The Hankins Family in about 1898-1889

This photograph of the Hankins family was likely taken in about 1898-1899, based on how old my grandfather, Francis William Hankins, looks in the photo.

The identifications are typed on a piece of paper and taped to the back. My mother tended to do this style of labeling, so I suspect she provided the identifications decades after the photo was taken. Looking at other photos, identified by other people, I believe the identifications are correct.

There is nothing visible on the mat board to indicate where the photo was taken, or who the photographer was.

If the photo does date from 1898 or so, then it may have been taken in Auburn, Cayuga County, New York were both Howard Ross Hankins and William Lucas Hankins were living.

Lucas Wurtz Hankins is seated on the left. Lucas, the son of John Hankins (1803-1847) and Susan Thomas (1811-1885), was born on 31 October 1831 at Ten Mile River, Sullivan County, New York. He married Mary Ellen Ross on 5 August 1857 at the home of her half brother Benjamin Tyler. Lucas died 11 December 1910 in Manchester, Wayne County, Pennsylvania.

Mary Ellen Ross, Lucas's wife, is seated on the right. Mary Ellen, the daughter of John Ross (1791-1837) and Sarah Kellem (1797-????), was born 25 August 1835 in Pennsylvania. She died on 16 April 1914 in Auburn, Cayuga County, New York.

Lucas and Mary Ellen had three children Laura Ardella (1858-1859), Howard Ross, and William Lucas.

Howard Ross Hankins is standing on the right. He was born 4 August 1863 in Manchester, Wayne County, Pennsylvania. On 6 March 1888, he married Emma M Chappius (1862-1889) on 6 March 1888 in Berkshire, Tioga County, New York. They had a daughter Mabel (1889-1890). Howard later married Martha M Hanning (1875-1960) on 26 May 1907 in Syracuse, Onondaga County, New York. He died on 27 March 1922 in Los Angeles, California.

William Lucas Hankins is seated in the center. He was born 11 October 1872 in Manchester, Wayne County, Pennsylvania. He married Mary Jane Kellam on 10 August 1896 in Newburgh, Orange County, New York. William died 24 June 1930 in Auburn, Cayuga County, New York.

Willam's wife Mary Jane Kellam is standing on the left. Mary Jane, the daughter of  John Ross Kellam (1830-1903) and Frances Maria Shafer (1846-1924) was born 2 September 1874 in Hankins, Sullivan County, New York. She died 26 September 1944 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

William and Mary Jane had three children, Francis William, Howard Ray, and Helen Maye.

Francis William Hankins is the child seated between Lucas and William. He was born 8 September 1897 in Auburn, Cayuga County, New York. He married Evelyn Clara Call (1895-1962) on 31 December 1920 at her parents' home in Stafford, Genesee County, New York. He died on 9 October 1983 in Norristown, Montgomery County, Pennsylvania.

Howard Ray and Helen Maye Hankins were twins, born 7 March 1900 in Auburn, Cayuga County, New York. Helen died 24 September 1900 in Hankins, Sullivan County, New York and Howard died 27 October 1900 in Auburn.
