Same Name - Married Twice. Both Times to Men Named William Smith - Week 6 of #52Ancestors
When I saw the theme for Week 6 of #52Ancestors - Same Name - I immediately thought of Margery Kellogg (1738-1816). She married twice - each time to a man names William Smith.
These are lines I haven't done any primary source research on, so my sources are old published family histories, and online records at Ancestry.com.
Margery Kellogg was born 6 Sept 1738 in Colchester, New London, Connecticut, the daughter of Jonathon Kellogg (1712-1745) and Mary Niles (1716-1812).
Sometime before 1759, Margery married William Smith, son of Samuel Smith. Margery and William Smith had at least 7 children.

William Smith settled his family in the Wyoming Valley, Pennsylvania. He served as a private soldier from Wyoming, Pennsylvania during the Revolutionary War. The family was living in the Wyoming Valley on July 3, 1778 when a raiding party of British and Native Americans led by John Butler, Sir John Johnson, and Joseph Brant attacked the valley, killing close to 300 settlers and taking others captive. William Smith was among those taken captive, and he soon died (either in captivity or he escaped and died of exposure).

According to various stories, Margery Kellogg Smith escaped down the river in a canoe with her children. She returned to the Wyoming Valley several months later where on 22 November 1779 she married Dr. William Hooker Smith, a physician in the Wyoming Valley.
William Hooker Smith was born 23 March 1725 in Guilford, New Haven, Connecticut. He was the son of John Smith (1702-1771) and Mehetible Hooker (1704-1775). William served in the Revolutionary War as a physician and surgeon with Gen. Sullivan's Troops in 1776.
He was married to Sarah (1725-1778) and had several children with her before marrying Margery in 1779.

- Susannah (1782-1829) m Isaac Ousterhout (1768-1824) and Fisher Gay (1778-1857)
William Hooker Smith and Margery lived out their lives in Wyoming County. William died on 17 July 1815 in Tunkhannock. Margery died on 16 January 1816 in Ousterhout.
So not only did Margery Kellogg marry two different men named William Smith, both of whom served in the Revolutionary War, the children in the blended family shared names. Both Margery Kellogg/William Smith and Sarah/William Hooker Smith had sons named William. William Hooker Smith had daughters named Susannah with each of his two wives.

And we're not even going to consider the number of William Smith's in the following generations in this family!
Very interesting!
