August and September 1936 in The Calls 1935-1943

Aug 10. Charles went to Akron to work, taking in and marketing cucumbers and green tomatoes.

Aug 12. Herbert and Louisa had their tonsils out.

Aug 21. Call Family picnic here. Something like 43 present. it rained during the day, but cleared so we had supper out doors. "It grew cold so all went in the house." It was amusing to see how quickly they entertained themselves. The east living room was quickly turned into a play room for the little ones who were busy as bees and very happy appearing. The young people pulled out the dining room talbe and playing ping pong. The older people gathered in changing groups and visiting with animation. There didn't seem to be a dull moment for any one. A telegram from Evelyn and Frank was read. "Greeting to all. Wish we could be with you." The young folks sung a while. Went home about 10. Those present, -

Aug 23  A heavy storm about midnight. High wind took off a big evergreen in Irving's yard, also a large apple tree.

Aug 25  Edith took Carrie, Clara and me to visit E. Frank & Sarah. We did some shopping, visited parks, had a nice visit.

Doris Walkley says her mother taught her children that when they entertained or were entertained they were under obligations to be as pleasant and friendly as possible.

An interesting incident occurred lately. They are the ???? were planning a school cafeteria at Jamestown. Katherine Walkley's father, Mr Parcel, is Supt. of schools there, and found an application from Miss Marian Call of Stafford (Arch Call's second daughter) I believe he called her up and eventually she was hired. I think she held the position from her graduation until she was married.

A pleasant note from Grace Joslin Shaver say "you will be interested to know that Clarke took four water lilies over to the Lancaster Flower Show and got first place. His prize was a new water lily, a pink one called Independence. It is much different from any of the others, more of a bluish tint, and the blossom stands up out of the water. Our pond has been wonderful this summer. We have been preparing water up from the creek and have had from one to two dozen blossoms most of the time. The rest of our garden hsa been so dry that the pond has been a beautiful oasis in the desert. Thanks to you for we never should have had it if you hadn't started us. There is no other lily pool around us that is half so nice."

Aug 29. "Sunday school picnic at Churchville Park., a very pleasant place. Edith is fine with the children. Malvern took the Watkins children."

Sept 10. Lucille had  a luncheon in honor of Clara. Mary Williams had "the works" on Sept 3rd. I brought a memory Book for Clara telling of the events of the summer, and with snap shots and so on.

Jane Donnan Walkley says she and Albert met here at a party Evelyn gave, - for the first time. She says she remembered Albert thru the years. Later, when she was teaching in Le Roy, Albert was traveling. Carrie, when writing to Albert, would mention Miss Jane Donnan and her liking for and admiration of her. Finally Albert wrote, "Mother, won't you propose to that Miss Jane Donnan for me." Later, it appears, he did it successfully for himself.

Sept 20. Eileen went to Syracuse to enter college. She rode with the Hackett's. Eileen Hackett enters too.

Evelyn Call Hankins to her father she says, "I can never tell you how much we all appreciated all you did for us last spring. We all know we shouldn't have had garden at all if it hadn't been for you. Frank has told everyone who has been here all summer who was responsible for our garden, and he usually adds "Some dad! They don't come any better!" We can all agree to that"  I asked Lucille if she read it, and she said "They aren't the only ones who know that!"

Miss Warren, daughter of Dr. Warren, and another young lady have been here several times inquiring of how I spend my time daily. I think Miss W. was to have her thesis on this. So I made this schedule on Tues Sept 22.
