July 1936 from The Calls 1935-1943

July 3. Clara came from Wichita. Carrie and Frank stopped as they went home from a meeting at Batavia. Edith got ready and went to Silver Lake Cottage. The Epworth League Institute opens tomorrow. Charles and I went in the afternoon. He had put two windows in the barn, and there is place for 4 or 5 cots there. Four are set up with mattress on.

July 4. Went to Carrie's. Had supper on the lawn. Ezra and Sara came by bus. Had a few fireworks here, with Irving's folks. Malvern came here - from Royal Oak. Went to the Lake at 10 P.M.

----- I just found that I have skipped the second half for May - Ezra and Sarah came from Florida May 11 to Carrie's. We, Charles and I, were invited to Carrie's to dinner the 12th. On the 15th Chas and I started to Niagara Falls with Ezra and Sarah. They had to find a new apartment. We drove 10 miles with them before they found anything they were satisfied with. We always tried to give them vegetables, fruit, canned goods, eggs when we had opportunity to get it to them. Early Monday morning after the 4th, Charles took them and Clara and I to N. Tonawanda where they were staying then. To turn back to May, Mable had invited Chas. and me to the Applewood, May 17,  and we asked Mr. and Mrs. Tibbetts to go with us as our guests. I think they are lovely people as I ever knew. Drove around some, calling at Clara Rudolphs. Irving sold a load of cull potatoes he was growing to draw out to the field, for $ 25.00. Seed potatoes $ 1.25.

July 8  Extremely warm 98°, 102 ° on the 9th, 100° the 10th, 99° on July 11, continued for about a week. Think it was the warmest I ever knew it to be here.

July 16. Edith's folks returned from the Lake last night where Edith has been House Mother for League attending the Epworth League Institute.

July 18. The League Members who attended the Institute had the Church Service this evening. Eileen was to speak of Kagana, E. Stanley Jones Albert Schweitzer Dr Ambedkar in contrast to Mussolini.

July 22. Had very many gatherings in Clara's house. Doris Donnan Walkley invited me and my girls Edith, Thelma, Lucille and Bertha. The next I find was Helen McEwen's where Edith and I, three Walkley wives Mrs Will McEwen and Mrs Comfort, the Harris Ladies and Stella Williams were guests - with Clara and Carrie. Then Jane Walkely entertained some variation as to guests Aug 19 is party at Mrs. Will Harris's. Then Mary Williams Aug 27, Lucille's Sept 10, Sept 3 Clara's party at Spring Brook Inn. Twenty were invited not all could go.

July 25th. We had a family picnic for Walkleys and Calls here. Had weiners and hamburg and lots of other good things to eat. Think there were 37 here, all but Fred's family and baby Deborah.

July 15  Baby Shower. Helen guest of honor was given by Thelma. Calls, Walkleys and the older girls of the next generation, were guests. Some games and presents to Helen made it interesting.
