Late September - December 1936 from The Calls 1935-1943

Sun. Sept 27. Malvern has had stomach trouble for a week and o Oct 4, Malvern has been sick for two weeks and is worse other than better to-day. Went to the doctor the 5th.

Tues., Oct 6  Helen Call Johnson's Jeremey Robert born.

Sun Oct 18. Edith took Malvern to Strong Memorial Hospital in Rochester. They took xrays, and on the 21st I heard they had found the ulcer and are not sure but there is some kidney trouble.

Oct 26. Edith brought Malvern home from the Hospital. He is expected to be very quiet for weeks. They brought down a bed and put it in the East living room by the bay window. He told some one later that we gave him the best room and the best prat of the rom.

Nov 3. Election, resulted in a "Sweeping Democratic Victory."

Dec 22. We had wanted to drive to Evelyn's but the roads continued to be so icy that we took the train. They gave me a great welcome. "Things looked very slick. The interior is fresh painted and papered. A new bathroom, a lavatory off of Mrs Hankins room and one off the basement room. It is all very attractive indeed. The night we got there Charles "walked over the place and planned the electrical supplies he would need."

We had a very pleasant Christmas day, with presents and good things to eat. Philip had an electric train with lots of accessories which I think the men enjoyed as well as the children. One day we drove to see Miles Frye at Ephrata. Another day Frank bought a quantity of posts part for a long grape arbor, part for fencing with electrical wire. Another day we went shopping to Philadelphia, and visited the Planetarium. In such fashion, the old year ended.

Sweeping Democratic Victory - In 1936, Franklin Delano Roosevelt soundly defeated Alf Landon for a second term as President of the United States. Roosevelt received 523 electoral votes, while Landon received 8. After the election, Democrats held 334 seats versus 88 Republican seats in the House of Representatives. Progressives held 8 seats, and Farm-Labor held 3. In the Senate, Democrats held 74 seats, Republicans 17 seats, Farm-Labor 2 seats, Progressives 1 seat and Independents 1 seat. In New York, Democrats won all the state-wide races. Elizabeth doesn't say what she though of the results. As late as the early 1920s, the Calls were active in Republican Party politics.

Evelyn's - Evelyn Clara Call (1895-1962) daughter of Charles Joslin Call and Elizabeth Ann Coe. She married Francis William Hankins (1897-1983) son of William Lucas Hankins (1872-1930) and Mary Jane Kellam (1874-1944) in 1920. The Hankins family lived in Collegeville, Pennsylvania on Long Lane Farm.

Mrs Hankins - Mary Jane Kellam (1874-1944) daughter of John Ross Kellam (1830-1903) and Frances Maria Shafer (1846-1924). She married William Lucas Hankins (1872-1930) son of Lucas Wurtz Hankins (1831-1910) and Mary Ellen Ross (1835-1914) in 1896.

Miles Frye - Miles William Fry (1898-1982) son of Jacob Fry (1859-1941) and Margaret Ruth (1859-1945). He married Babette Ruppin in 1923 and appears to have been a lifelong resident of Ephrata, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. I haven't been able to figure out how Miles Fry knew the Hankins family.

Grape Arbor - The grape arbor was part of the gardens at Long Lane Farm for many years. These may be photographs of the grape arbor
