November & December 1939 from The Calls 1935-1943
On Oct 8 Elizabeth Daniels baby, fourth child, only girl, arrived, Pheobe Jocelyn
Mon 6. Edith went right after school to Kenmore for Ezra and Sarah
Tues Nov 7. "E.F. and Sarah's 56th Wedding Anniversary. E.F. picked popcorn, helped Irving put the screens away, picked apples, was buy most of the day." This was the way he always did when he visited Carrie and me. Sarah insisted on doing all the dishes, and helped all she could. "Edith and I were invited to supper at Carrie's at 5:30. The neighbors, nephews and nieces and few other relations gathered to greet and congratulate Ezra and Sarah. The nieces served small fancy cakes and cookies, with tea and fruit drinks. Thelma spoke of it first, that we ought to have a dinner or something for them. I felt I could hardly bear to have it here, but we are all so glad we could show them our regard by such a gathering."
Nov 9 - Dec 7. Visited at Evelyn's. I dreaded the trip going alone, as I never have traveled alone much in my whole life. I have never made the trip to Evelyn's since Charles' death that my eyes have not dimmed repeatedly, at the feeling of the companionship I have lost. Otherwise I enjoyed the trip. Evelyn was quite vexed that she was delayed by a flat tire as she was on her way to meet me. A young man met, as I got off,, and said "Is this Mrs. Call? Mrs Hankins is delayed." I had hardly found a seat before the children came in.
Evelyn is fine company. Seems as tho I have about the best visits with her of any body. Of course that is probably partly because I am so deaf it is very hard and embarrassing for lots of people to visit with me. The girl ????? has eczema in her hands, so I washed dishes and prepared vegetables. Evelyn says I save her four hours of work a day in the kitchen, but she exaggerates! She has been able to do some more sewing by my helping. She made a dress and coat for her self, and a house dress, a bed dress, slate blue rayon $ 1.00 a yard, and two house dresses for me, and fixed over a practically new coat of Mrs. Hankins for me, and a coat for Elizabeth, Irving's jacket for Philip. I have made her a large rug of blanket pieces, it is 75 X 56 inches.
Nov 11, I wrote "Armistice Day. War new threatening." One day we went to a meeting of the State Federation of Garden Clubs, with Mrs. French, the wife of a former State Sec of Agriculture. She is pretty, and actively engaged in various community enterprises, beside her home and four children. Mrs Frances King showed two of her homes with color flower pictures. In the afternoon a lady demonstrated arrangement of flowers, fruits, etc. She was original, and exceptionally fine. We did quite a lot of gardening - cleaning up, putting in bulbs. Evelyn always has choice new books for me to read. Among those I read was "Horse and Buggy Doctor", The Patriot by Pearl Buck, Bread and Wine, an Italian story too brutal for my taste, "All This and Heaven Too," by Rachel Field, tells of the illustrious Field brothers - incidentally -it is the story of the wife of one of them, the editor of The Evangelist, a leading religious paper when I was young. One brother was Cyrus, "how Cyrus laid the cable," another a supreme court judge, another an architect, great bridges. We also pieced blankets.
Dec 19. I sent no cards. Charles was always so interested in sending, and receiving, that I felt I could not send any this year, when he had helped me so much before. Sarah wrote I am sure you miss Charles very much this time of year especially, but I have a feeling that he is not far from you." I have cried more that last few days than any week since Charles went. The Christmas cards with their kind and sympathetic sentiments are more than I can stand.
Dec 21. Very stormy. Cars stalled off of Main road. Edith was ready to have her Christmas exercises, but had to postpone it. Edith tells this story of Louisa. She has part in a play where she is supposed to say "It seems as tho this whole dinner party rests on me!: She is quite an actress, Edith says, and one time in the intensity of her feeling, she exclaimed "It seems as tho the whole darned dinner party rests on me!"
Mon 25. Our family including Eileen and Alden, after emptying the stockings with Irving's family, spent Christmas at Robert's. Fine dinner, pleasant visit. "Robert gave me a check for $ 800.00 for the Estate. $ 500.00 to apply on his note - he hoped it might be used to pay Mrs Torrey who had said she would like it, but wouldn't wish to put us to any inconvenience."
Tues 26. Edith and I and her children invited Rev. Mr Carpenter to dinner to-night.
