Unusual Source - Message from the Spirit World - Week 7 of #52Ancestors

My great grandparents Charles Joslin Call (1859-1939) and Elizabeth Ann Coe (1862-1956) were married for almost 55 years. They married on November 5, 1884 at the home of the bride's parents in Le Roy, Genesee County, New York, and remained together until Charles' death on June 12, 1939.

I've been transcribing excerpts from Elizabeth's journals that she compiled in the 1930s and 1940s into books of  reminiscenses for family members. 

Elizabeth didn't talk much about her relationship with Charles before his death. And after his death, there were mentions of doing things alone for the first time. In December 1939, she didn't send out Christmas cards because it was something he always enjoyed - and mentioned how in the days leading up to the holidays in 1939, she had cried more than she had since his death. 

In early January, Elizabeth received a letter from her sister-in-law Sarah (1856-1941), wife of her brother Ezra Frank Coe (1853-1943), recounting information from their son Charles Albert (1890-1978). Sarah wrote: 

"I have been wanting to write something Albert told me about you. He knows a man who is interested in Spiritualism, and he has asked Albert to go with him a few times, but he is not interested in it, but this is what happened. The person asked Albert whom he had that had entered the spirit world recently. He told them he had an Uncle Charles who had gone recently. He said this uncle wants to give you a message for Elizabeth - they call her Lizzie. He said to tell her that he was happy, and that after a while she would come where he is, and that she was being looking after and would be all right." 

If you had asked me if I ever expected to see something about spiritualism from my great-grandmother, I'd have said - no way - based on what I know about her. 

I have to hope though, that the message from Charles sent through Albert and Sarah - brought comfort to Elizabeth as she continued on after his death 

And I suspect it did bring comfort to her - not only did she record it her diary in 1940 - but she also repeated the information in the manuscript she wrote for her descendants.

   I recently received a set of recipe cards from a cousin that were written by out grandmother Evelyn Clara (Call) Hankins, probably between 1920 (when she married) and 1962 (when she died). My grandmother was born in Wichita, Sedgewick, Kansas in 1895. Within a few months of her birth, the family moved back to Stafford, Genesee County, New York where her parents, Charles Joslin Call (1859-1939) and Elizabeth Ann Coe (1862-1956) were born. Evelyn lived in Stafford on the family farm until she left for college, first at Northwestern University in Chicago and then at Cornell University in Ithaca, New York. She graduated from Cornell in 1919 with a degree in Home Economics. After graduating, she worked for a year at Wells College in Aurora, Cayuga, New York, possibly as the Superintendent of a Dormitory, as a housekeeper or as a teacher.   The fifteenth photo in the album is Mary Ellen (Ross) Hankins (1835-1914), wife of Lucas Wurtz Hankins.  Mary Ellen Ross was born 25 August 1835 in Pennsylvania, the daughter of John Ross (1791-1837) and Sarah Kellam (1797-after 1850). She married Lucas Wurtz Hankins (1831-1910), son of John Hankins (1803-1847) and Susan Thomas (1811-1885) on 5 August 1857 at the home of Benjamin Tyler. Lucas and Mary Ellen had three children: Laura Ardella (1858-1859) Howard Ross (1863-1922) married first Emma M. Adding a Citation to a Document using Photoshop Elements 2023

This is the first is an occasional series of blog posts on using Photoshop Elements 2023 for genealogists. Many of my genealogist friends know I'm also a photographer, so have asked me how I do some things with genealogy-related images. The problem is - I use Photoshop and Lightroom - which are probably overkill for most genealogists, and are a subscription-based package. I used to recommend Irfanview (and still do for some things) but I was finding it hard to do some of what I do in Photoshop in Irfanview.  So enter Photoshop Elements 2023 - it has more features than Irfanview but isn't as user-hostile as Photoshop can be.
