September & October 1939 from The Calls 1935-1943

Sat Sept 2.  Clara had a dinner at the Robinwood, for her relatives, including nieces and nephews.

Wed 13. Harry Hunt and helper came to shingle house. Charles had half of it done a few years ago. These replace the original shingles put on when the house was built in 1875.

Sept 20-23. Eileen went back to Cornell by train, on Wed. Lucille took Marie and Elizabeth on Thurs.

Wed 27. Irving and his colored man, Sellers, put up the big mahogany doors in the living room. The doors had been up in the barn since war time, 1917, when fuel was scarce and high, and conservation and of patriotism. We burned gas that winter and had trouble to keep warm. It was quite a job to clean and restore (partly) them.

Sept 30. Edith culling hens, cleaning hen houses, nests, etc., ready to take care of the poultry.

Oct 26. "Carrie called, while Frank went to see Mr Matthews, who is in poor health. Carrie says Mrs Keitel once said if Thelma wasn't good to us she'd "wring her neck." I picked some chrysanthemums for Carrie and Frank said "Always carrying something home!" Frank recalled that once when they had bees Carrie said she would give me some honey. She failed to get it and as we were going, I said "Good by hone!" I got the honey.

Fri 27. Edith had a Teacher's meeting in Buffalo, and we visited E.F. and Sarah, and after lunch and dinner, good-ones - and a nice visit we visited Arthur's folks until Sunday afternoon. Edith Adelle was home from Brockport. R.O. cam home (from Fort Niagara, I think) "At night he dressed in his band costume" to play at a dance, "and looked very fine. His young lady friend was in, - a nice looking gir. i think Helen is handsome, Jerry is a little beauty, jolly, smiling and dimpled."

Tues 31. "Edith had a Hallow'een party for her school children. They appeared to have a grand time."
