Moving to Wichita - The Calls 1896 - 1915 - 1934

Image
In the Spring of ’89 Papa went West to find a business to engage in. He went to Denver where Uncle Frank and Aunt Sarah were, but decided to go to Wichita and locate. We were very happy there, but business did not pay. We went Apr. 17, 1889, arriving the 19. We lived at 1050 N. Mosley for nearly years, - till Jan ’94. We enjoyed our Church relations at St. Paul’s M.E. Church. Our pastors were Rev. Hoyt Weir, Dougald McCormack, and E.C. Beach. There were all very smart men and most real good. Mr. C.L. Davidson was Superintendent all the time, and was a model. Arthur missed but very few Sundays at S.S. all the year we were there. The Anawalts, Sims, Addingtons, Pritles, Reeds, Rev. Viele, Mrs. Goldberg, and the Muellers, were among the most prominent members. Edith and Robert went to Sunday School a good deal. I taught the class of young ladies two and a half years, - and enjoyed it very much. Blanche Neely Ketzler, Grace Smith, Angie Dutton, Alma and Carrie Cooley, Berta Thompson, Le...

Marriage - The Calls 1896 - 1915 - 1934

Image
We were married Nov. 5, 1884 at home. Nearly one hundred of our relatives and nearest friends were present. Mr. Byron Sherwood and Mr. Hiram Horton, with Aunts Clara and Carrie, “stood up “ with us. After we took a week’s trip stopping at Albany where we saw Governor Cleveland who was elected President Nov. 4. We admired the beautiful white marble Capitol. As we passed along the street the cannons fired in honor of Cleveland’s election. A nice looking gentleman stood tying his horse which jumped at the noise. Her master said “Never mind, Jennie, it’s for Cleveland” It made us smile, he was so pleased. We visited Central Park, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and spent a short time with my schoolmate and friend Mrs. Milton Covelle, a Baptist Minister’s wife at White Plains. We saw the battle field from my friend’s dining room widow, and passed the plain old house that was once Washington’s Headquarters. Papa taught school again that winter at “Jug City.” We went to house keeping...

How Charles and Elizabeth Met - The Calls 1896 - 1915 - 1934

Image
Papa and Mama (Charles and Elizabeth) first met in the winter of ’76 and 7. Aunt Lizzie and mama were schoolmates, and Aunt Lizzie invited mama and another schoolmate to come out to the new house to stay over night. Papa did not feel well that evening, and spent his time on the lounge, so we not get much acquainted. The next winter we went to [sch]ool together, for a time, at the Le Roy Academy, and papa took me riding and paid me some little attentions then. I taught school at Lime Rock that summer with sixteen [???]th pupils my age. Papa taught the next winter and boarded at Grandpa Coe’s.   Uncle George and Aunt Mary were married the seventh of May, 1879, and were there at that time, so there was quite a family. I was at Geneseo State Normal School that winter, and I taught the Lime Rock School again the next summer. T he next winter Papa went to Geneseo to school, and I went with Uncle Ezra Frank Coe on a visit West. We went to Uncle Hiram’s Coe at Nashville, Mich, a...
