Moving to Wichita - The Calls 1896 - 1915 - 1934

In the Spring of ’89 Papa went West to find a business to engage in. He went to Denver where Uncle Frank and Aunt Sarah were, but decided to go to Wichita and locate. We were very happy there, but business did not pay. We went Apr. 17, 1889, arriving the 19. We lived at 1050 N. Mosley for nearly years, - till Jan ’94.

We enjoyed our Church relations at St. Paul’s M.E. Church. Our pastors were Rev. Hoyt Weir, Dougald McCormack, and E.C. Beach. There were all very smart men and most real good. Mr. C.L. Davidson was Superintendent all the time, and was a model. Arthur missed but very few Sundays at S.S. all the year we were there. The Anawalts, Sims, Addingtons, Pritles, Reeds, Rev. Viele, Mrs. Goldberg, and the Muellers, were among the most prominent members. Edith and Robert went to Sunday School a good deal. I taught the class of young ladies two and a half years, - and enjoyed it very much. Blanche Neely Ketzler, Grace Smith, Angie Dutton, Alma and Carrie Cooley, Berta Thompson, Leonda Tompson, and Maggie Mueller were some of “my girls.”

In Jan ’93 we moved into our own house at 1615 Park Place Ave. It is a very pleasant house delightfully located. Rows of lovely young elms, soft maples and mulberry trees on both sides of the street in front, and the Fairview Ave Electric car line was just back of us. The Irving School house, a handsome brick building is just near enough, and two or three churches near by. Our nicest neighbors were the Papes family, including Editor Lew, Amy, Allie, Daisy, Walter and Carl, and the father and mother [????? ??]n. Mrs Clement and mother Mrs. Brewer, and Mr. Powell.

1615 Park Place Ave - The 1894 Wichita City Directory shows Charles J Call living at 1615 Park Place.

Fairview  Ave Electric car line - In 1889, the Wichita City Railway Company began replacing the horse drawn cars they used with electric cars. By the mid-1890's, the Wichita Electric Railway and Light Company was running the city's public transit system. So far, I have not been able to find a map of the Wichita Electric Railway from the 1890s or a photo of the Fairview Ave Electric Car line. There are photos of the South Main Street Car line ,  the Cleveland Avenue Streetcar  and the Riverside Streetcar all from 1898. It is likely the cars on the Fairview Ave line were similar.

Irving School house - The Irving School was one of the earliest schools in Wichita. Named for Washington Irving, the original school was built prior to 1884. In 1887, a new building with eight classrooms was built facing Lawrence Road. This building was in use until 1941. This is presumably the school Charles Arthur Call attended.

They lived at the corner of Sixteenth and Park Place, so within a house or two of the Calls.

Mrs Clement and mother Mrs Brewer - Julia Brewer (1844-1928) widow of George W Clement (1836-1896), and her mother Tamsien Elizabeth Griswold  (1809 -1901) widow of William Ely Brewer (1807-1882),  lived at 1454 Fairview, so within a block or so of the Calls.

Mr Powell - John Lee Powell (1859-1946), his wife Clara Laura Berry (1863-1950) and their children Clarence (1883-1915), Herbert (1887-1935) and Nellora (1895-1919) lived at 1550 Park Place, just a few houses up the street from the Calls. He served as Mayor of Wichita in 1919-1920.
