Ezra Frank Coe - c 1883 - page 9 of Charles Joslin Call and Elizabeth Ann Coe's photograph album

The eight photograph is Ezra Frank Coe (1853-1942), brother of Elizabeth Ann Coe.

Ezra Frank Coe was born 26 December 1853 in Pavilion, Genesee County, New York to Albert Coe (1827-1907) and Deborah Prentice (1833-1910).

Sarah Frances Ward was born on 6 June 1856 in Pavilion, Genesee County, New York to Charles Kendall Ward (1819-1898) and Laura Caroline Davenport (1822-1876).

He married Sarah France Ward (1856 - 1942) daughter of Charles Kendall Ward (1819-1898) and Laura Caroline Davenport (1822-1876) on November 7, 1883 in LeRoy, Genesee County.

Wedding invitation shared by Marion Sperry Howe.

Ezra and Sarah moved frequently during the early years of their marriage. In 1885, the Iowa state census has them living in Perry, Dallas County, Iowa. Just over a year later in December 1886, their daughter Clara Evelyn Coe (1886-1972) was born in Hiawatha, Brown County, Kansas. In January 1890, their son Charles Albert Coe (1890-1978) was born in Denver, Adams County, Colorado. By 1892, they were living in Wichita, Sedgewick County, Kansas, where Ezra was employed as a traveling salesman for the Buckeye Machine Company. By 1900. they had returned to Genesee County, living in Le Roy, right next door to Ezra's parents, Albert and Deborah Coe. Their younger daughter, Laura Frances Coe (1901-1964) was born in Le Roy in February 1901.

For about 25 years, the family remained in the Genesee County area. In 1920, they were living in Batavia. In about 1926, Ezra and Sarah relocated to Tampa, Hillsborough County, Florida, where they lived for the remainder of their lives. They did return to the Genesee County area regularly, spending several months there each year.

Ezra and Sarah both died in January 1942 in Tampa - Ezra died on January 6, Sarah followed on January 7.

My guess is the photo was taken in about 1883 - based on the style of the card and the information on the back of the photo on the facing page.

The style of the card - type of photograph, type of cardstock, border, etc indicate the photograph could have been taken anytime between 1870 and 1900.

The photographer, Levi Sherman (1834-1901) was active in Rochester between 1875 and 1896. Between 1881 and 1888, his studio was located at 40 State Street in Rochester, the address on the back of the card.

The photograph facing this on in the album is a photograph of Sarah Frances Ward, with a date of November 1883 on the back. It was taken by the same photographer, with the same styling on the back. So they may well have been taken at or near the same time. Sarah and Ezra married in November 1883, so it would not have been unusual for them to have sat for portraits shortly before or after their wedding.
