How Charles and Elizabeth Met - The Calls 1896 - 1915 - 1934

Papa and Mama (Charles and Elizabeth) first met in the winter of ’76 and 7. Aunt Lizzie and mama were schoolmates, and Aunt Lizzie invited mama and another schoolmate to come out to the new house to stay over night. Papa did not feel well that evening, and spent his time on the lounge, so we not get much acquainted. The next winter we went to [sch]ool together, for a time, at the Le Roy Academy, and papa took me riding and paid me some little attentions then. I taught school at Lime Rock that summer with sixteen [???]th pupils my age. Papa taught the next winter and boarded at Grandpa Coe’s.

Uncle George and Aunt Mary were married the seventh of May, 1879, and were there at that time, so there was quite a family. I was at Geneseo State Normal School that winter, and I taught the Lime Rock School again the next summer.

The next winter Papa went to Geneseo to school, and I went with Uncle Ezra Frank Coe on a visit West. We went to Uncle Hiram’s Coe at Nashville, Mich, and had a nice visit with the cousins I had never seen before. Then we visited a long time at Aunt Carrie Allen’s in Wis, and at Uncle Horace Prentice’s in Iowa, and Uncle Jesse Coe at Clinton, Ia., and cousins and other relatives.

In the spring after my return, I taught a short term in the “Little Room” at Stafford. The school years of 1881-2 and 1882-3 I spent at “Ingham Collegiate Institute” and graduated there in June 1883.

Papa worked on the farm summers, and taught in the “Randall district” the winter of 1881-2, and that Spring began to work “the farm” on thirds. Grandpa Call bought the “Adam’s farm” that spring. The next winter (1882-3) he taught at “Jug City.”
