Memories of the Calls 14 - Le Roy Academy

In the fall of 1875 I went to the Le Roy Academy (Academic Institute.) Albert had been going there for three years. We drove horse and buggy or horse and cutter. After Albert stopped going I usually rode horseback. I went there four years, the last term in a Teacher's Training class. We had to pay tuition, $ 12.00 or $ 15.00 a term, three terms a year. There were no High schools around here at that time. Prof. Munro was principal, Mrs. McKercher and Mrs. E.A. Hooker the leading teachers.

Le Roy Academy was the Le Roy Academic Institute founded in 1864 and operated until 1891. The school provided classical and business education programs. This photo dates from 1890, the building pictured was built in 1865 so is likely the one Charles Joslin Call attended.



Value of $ 12.00 - $ 15.00. It's always hard to calculate monetary values across time. But as a comparison, in 1875, a farm laborer earned less than $ 20/month. An 1875 dollar is worth $23.52 in 2020 dollars.

I have not been able to identify either Prof. Munro or Mrs. McKercher.

Mrs. E.A. Hooker is probably Ellen Kelly (1833-1918) widow of Dr. Samuel Hooker (1828-1871). In the 1880 census, she was living in Le Roy with her occupation listed as teacher.

   I recently received a set of recipe cards from a cousin that were written by out grandmother Evelyn Clara (Call) Hankins, probably between 1920 (when she married) and 1962 (when she died). My grandmother was born in Wichita, Sedgewick, Kansas in 1895. Within a few months of her birth, the family moved back to Stafford, Genesee County, New York where her parents, Charles Joslin Call (1859-1939) and Elizabeth Ann Coe (1862-1956) were born. Evelyn lived in Stafford on the family farm until she left for college, first at Northwestern University in Chicago and then at Cornell University in Ithaca, New York. She graduated from Cornell in 1919 with a degree in Home Economics. After graduating, she worked for a year at Wells College in Aurora, Cayuga, New York, possibly as the Superintendent of a Dormitory, as a housekeeper or as a teacher. Mary Ellen (Ross) Hankins (1835-1914)

  The fifteenth photo in the album is Mary Ellen (Ross) Hankins (1835-1914), wife of Lucas Wurtz Hankins.  Mary Ellen Ross was born 25 August 1835 in Pennsylvania, the daughter of John Ross (1791-1837) and Sarah Kellam (1797-after 1850). She married Lucas Wurtz Hankins (1831-1910), son of John Hankins (1803-1847) and Susan Thomas (1811-1885) on 5 August 1857 at the home of Benjamin Tyler. Lucas and Mary Ellen had three children: Laura Ardella (1858-1859) Howard Ross (1863-1922) married first Emma M. Adding a Citation to a Document using Photoshop Elements 2023

This is the first is an occasional series of blog posts on using Photoshop Elements 2023 for genealogists. Many of my genealogist friends know I'm also a photographer, so have asked me how I do some things with genealogy-related images. The problem is - I use Photoshop and Lightroom - which are probably overkill for most genealogists, and are a subscription-based package. I used to recommend Irfanview (and still do for some things) but I was finding it hard to do some of what I do in Photoshop in Irfanview.  So enter Photoshop Elements 2023 - it has more features than Irfanview but isn't as user-hostile as Photoshop can be. And it's available for purchase as a stand-alone package - no monthly subscription fees!
