Memories of the Calls 17 - The "Sweetland Farm" - Pleasant Grove, Built in 1823

Father bought what we called the Sweetland Farm, of Ralph Sweetland in the fall of 1878. This farm was part of a tract embracing two others, and taken up and settled by the father of the Sweetlands we knew. Charles owned and lived on the farm across the road from the Ralph Sweetland farm. Ralph had two children, Harvey and Anna. Charles and I were in school with Anna. Charles Sweetland told us he was born in 1823. The house, - at Pleasant Grove, - was built that summer. The big Maple trees were planted either that year or before. Charles had a daughter, Frances, who married Wm. Radley and was grandmother of Frederic, and mother of Florence, Mrs Clifford Trick, and Charles. Then came Martha, Mrs Rumsey, she and her husband were teachers for years. After Edgar Rumsey's death, Martha built a small house in Stafford. She was town clerk, Stafford, for several years. Sarah married a Mr. Inance (?) and Georgia married George Pearson who had one daughter. I believe another farm joined on the south and was owned by Albert Sweetland. It was afterward owned by John Fargo, and by James Gill or his son-in-law Thos. Heddon, and is now, 1935, owned by Roy Pestle. Ernest Gruner bought the Charles Sweetland farm about 1918.

Albert Call worked the farm in 1879-80. Then he moved to his wife's father's farm, the Salmon White farm, where they lived until about 1900, when father bought the Combs place, where Merril now lives, and lived there until they bought the house in Batavia and moved there. Samuel Joslin followed in 1881. Then two brothers named Ward in 1882-3. Charles Call worked with Prospect Farm in 1884-5. Then Father Call rented it to Sam'l Bridges who worked it on shares for ten years. Then we came back from Wichita in 1895, and the next spring we went there and worked until Oct. 31, 1913 when we came here to Prospect Farm.

The deed for the Sweetland farm was executed February 19, 1879 between Ralph Sweetland and his wife Aurelia and Robert Call. Purchase price was $ 10,000.

• Martha Sweetland  (1856 - 1934 )  daughter of Charles Sweetland and Mary DeShon. She married Ezra J Rumsey (not Edgar) (1859-1915) son of Charles Rumsey and Polly Gorton. 
• Sarah Sweetland (1861 - 1947) daughter of Charles Sweetland and Mary DeShon. She married Arthur E. Quance (not Mr. Inance) (1861-1903) son of Israel Quance and Elizabeth. 
• Georgia Sweetland (1866-1925)  daughter of Charles Sweetland and Mary DeShon. She married George Worthington Pearson (1867 - 1937) son of Richard Pearson and Theresa Lewis. 
• Elizabeth Pearson (1894-1966) daughter of George Pearson and Georgia Sweetland. She married Alfred Ollson. 
• Albert Sweetland  (1839 - 1927) son of Harvey Sweetland and Samantha Munger, He married Persis DeShon, sister of Mary DeShon, wife of Charles Sweetland. 

John Fargo may be John Griffith Fargo (1831-1910) son of Isaac Fargo and Sarah Rogers. He married Cornelia Hollister.

James Gill is James Gill (1834-1910) son of Thomas Gill and Grace Treble. He married Elizabeth Moore.

Thos Heddon is Thomas Jefferson Heddon (1856-1927) son of William Heddon and Maria Wood. He married Caroline Gill (1864-1943) daughter of James Gill and Elizabeth Moore.

Roy Pestle (1887 - 1969) son of Frank Pestle and Gertrude Phillips. He married Anna Bossart and Ada Turner.

Ernest Gruner (1883 - 1979) son of Christian Gruner and Barbara Motz. He married Emmeline Clark.

Albert Call (1857-1934) son of Robert Call and Charlotte Joslin. He married Effie May White

Salmon White farm - Salma White (1817-1881), son of Phineas White and Mary Beswick. He married Betsy Chittenden. Their daughter Effie May White (1852-1935) married Albert Henry Call in 1879.

Merrill Call is Ralph Merrill Call (1885-1959) son of Albert Henry Call and Effie May White. He married Edith Harper.

Samuel Joslin (1849-1913) son of Robert Bird Joslin and Mary Ann Adams. Youngest brother of Charlotte Joslin. He married Sarah Adams. On April 29, 1881 -  it was mentioned in the Progressive Batavian - " List of people moving that spring - Mr Samuel Joslyn to Mrs Robert Call's farm Stafford " 

Ward brothers - possibly William Ward (1828-1901) and Thomas Ward (1832-1919). They were both born in Chulmleigh, Devon, England - the same village where Mary Ann Adams, mother of Charlotte Joslin was born in 1809.

Sam'l Bridges is probably either Samuel Bridges (1833-1912) who married Ann Robins or their son Samuel Bridges (1863-1945) who married Alice Geer. I lean towards Samuel Bridges (1833-1912). He was living in Stafford in 1892, while his son was living in LeRoy from at least 1892 - 1900. The farm was leased to Sam'l Bridges from roughly 1885-1895.
