Memories of the Calls 5 - New Home, now Prospect Farm

In the fall of 1867, after working the Ives place the third year, Robert and Charlotte Call began to look for a farm to buy for themselves. They decided on the Woodruff farm of about 56 acres a mile east of Stafford, and move here April 1, 1868. In March, before they moved, the seventy acres east of the Woodruff farm, bounded by the road north of here, came on the market. They wanted it, succeeded in borrowing the money to make a payment and bought that also. he paid $ 2000.00 down, ~ and had his team and tools and very little besides. After he made his purchases, he found himself $ 10,000 in debt on which he paid 7% interest. What magnificent daring! With a different result we would say What foolhardiness!

When they moved, Albert and Charles drove the cattle, eight or ten head, and three pigs. Of course the pigs were the problem.

All the buildings were old, small and inconvenient.  A pig pen was jacked up, and made a stable for horses which served the purpose until 1881.

In the summer of 1868 the barn that was near the corner east of here - quite a new barn, - was moved down the road and around the west of the other barn to its present location. The barn was 30 X 40 feet and was called The Hemlock Barn, being constructed entirely of Hemlock lumber.

Charles dictates; - in the summer of 1868 I went to school to the stone school house a mile east of here. The old was torn down and anew one of wood has been built withing the past few years. Miss Helen Lyman, and older sister of Elizabeth Lyman, was teacher. In the fall, I went to Stafford and was in the Primary Grade room the first term. Miss Fannie Barnett, afterwards Mrs. Frank Drury, was teacher. The following six years I attended school at Stafford. Among my teachers were Israel M. Peck, father of the Peck Brothers who still (1935) reside in Stafford at the Homested Place, - J.F. Stertterd, who adopted Belle, having no children of their own. She was married to Leonard Wood, and now (1935) live in the Stetterd house. Another was a Mr. Hoyt, and also Safford & North, later Judge North, a brother of James A., who was later our neighbor and good friend. One year I remember there were 66 on the roll in the big room. Some of the older pupils were John Darch, Ethel's father, - John Page, William Page and Wm. Trick. Others were Hattie and Lizzie Drury, Minnie and Bessie Page, Amy Courtney (Mrs. Hall) John and Maria Price (Mrs John Gillard) Emma Westcoff, Emma and Charles Smith (they were our neighbors, farm adjoining on our west,) Wilbur and Willis Trick, twins, Ira Page, E.M. Pamphilon, John Heal and William Passmore.

Father usually kept two hired men in summer times but there were always plenty to be done, and we had orders to come right when school was out.

By 1877 father had reduced his indebtedness so he felt justified in repairing the west or stable barn. These improvements included a new barn floor, new siding, and a 16 foot "bent" or addition, and in a new cow stable was installed. The old stable was just a shed with a board roof and was very cold.
