More Loose Photos from the Back of the Album

I'm very lucky to have several of my grandmother Evelyn Clara Call's (1895-1962) photo albums. And perhaps even luckier that she labeled many of the photos - so I know roughly when and where they were taken, and who was in the photos.

My grandmother attended Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois in 1915-1916, and then Cornell University in Ithaca, New York from 1916-1919.

In the back of the album are about 50 loose photographs. I'm sharing them in the order they are in the envelope.  Most have no writing on the back, for those that do, I'll include the backs of the images.

Philip Charles Hankins (on lap)

Philip Charles Hankins, son of Francis William Hankins (1897-1983) and Evelyn Clara Call (1895-1962),  was born 15 May1931 in Plainfield, Union County, New Jersey. He died 10 September 2006 in Bethesda, Montgomery County, Maryland.

The woman holding Philip may be a Kellam cousin.

Evelyn Clara Call

Evelyn Clara Call, daughter of Charles Joslin Call (1859-1939) and Elizabeth Ann Coe (1862-1956), was born 12 February 1895 in Wichita, Sedgewick County, Kansas. She married Francis William Hankins (1897-1893), son of William Lucas Hankins (1872-1930) and Mary Jane Kellam (1874-1944), on 31 December 1920 in Stafford, Genesee County, New York. She died on 10 June 1962 in Philadelphia, Philadelphia County, Pennsylvania.

Call Memorial Hall
Call Memorial Hall on Morganville Road, in Stafford, Genesee County, New York, was established in 1908 by Robert Call. Up until 1908, the building was the Morganville Hotel. When it went up for sale, Robert Call purchased it so that it could not be used as a saloon. An active prohibitionist, Robert did not want there to be a saloon located next to the church he attended.

Robert established the Call Memorial Hall Association with a board of trustees to oversee the building. His three children, Albert, Charles and Elizbaeth, were the first trustees. According to a 1908 newpaper article

"It is desired that two women trustees shall be members of the W.C.T.U. or Good Templars, as my wife was a member of both organizations. She organized the W.C.T.U. No one can be a trustee who indulges in intoxicating liquors. No gambling or games of chance where money or valuable thing is a consideration, is to be permitted on the premises. Profanity, smoking or dancing are prohibited in all buildings and barns on the grounds."

"The hall can be used for lectures and entertainments that may be helpful to the community. A reading room may be established in it, or a singing school. The W.C.T.U. shall have the use of it for a fee of $ 1 and for janitor work. The Prohibition Party, or any party having the same object (the destruction of the liquor traffic), shall have the use of it for $ 1; any other party at the cost of fuel, lights, janitor and $1.

Call Memorial Hall operated under these terms for more than a century. In 2017, the building was sold and proceeds donated to the Morganville United Church of Christ. (See Memorial Hall from the Memories of the Calls for more information about Call Memorial Hall.

Robert Call and probably one of his Daniels granddaughters

Robert Call, the son of John Call (1788-1872) and Grace Payne (1789-1862), was born 5 June 1831 in Chawleigh, Devon, England. He immigrated to the United States in 1853, arriving in Philadelphia on March 22. He married Charlotte Joslin (1834-1908) on 16 July 1854 in Fitchburg, Worcester County, Massachusetts. Robert died on 9 May 1913 in Stafford, Genesee County, New York.

The photograph for the postcard was taken after 1908 when Call Memorial Hall was established. Of Robert's granddaughters - only Rosalind Alberta Daniels (1897-1990) or Frances Emogene Daniels (1903-1984) -  were the right age to possibly be the young girl in the photograph.
