Hauflers and Schicklers Coming to America

In the past few days, I've found several passenger arrival records that shed new light on the Schickler and Haufler families immigration pattern to the U.S.

We'd known that  my great grandfather William Frederick George Schickler (1873-1936) had immigrated to the U.S. in 1887 after his parents died. We knew there was a Haufler aunt married to a man named Beller who was a baker. And that there was one other Haufler uncle in New York. We also knew that at some point, William's brother George immigrated. And we had a hint that there was another Haufler aunt who was dead by 1899 and that her husband was somewhere in America.

But we didn't know when people arrived, and in what order.

The first member of the family I've found who immigrated to New York was Christiane Wilhelmine Haufler. (1856-1889) She was born on August 25, 1856 in Marbach, Wurttemberg, the daughter of Gottlieb Friedrich Haufler (1820-1899) and Christine Catharina Haas (1819-1904). She was the younger sister of Marie Frederike Haufler (1846-1887), who was married to Gottlieb Wilhelm Schickler (1848-1885). Christiane arrived in New York on February 25, 1881 on the ship Wieland from Hamburg and Le Havre.

Eighteen months after Christiane arrived in New York, she married Jakob Heinrich Sturm on August 31, 1882 in Kings County, New York. Heinrich (1857-1950) immigrated from Germany on June 2, 1880 on the Ship Algeria which had departed from Liverpool, England and Queenstown, Ireland. His occupation was listed as carpenter. It is unknown if the couple knew each other in Germany or met in New York.

The next member of the family I've found who immigrated to New York was Wilhelmine Sophie Haufler. (1859-1895) She was born on January 28, 1859 in Marbach, Wurttemberg, the daughter of Gottlieb Friedrich Haufler and Christine Catharina Haas. Wilhelmine arrived in New York on March 12, 1883 on the ship Oder which had departed from Bremen and Southhampton on this particular voyage. She was 23 years old, and listed as having no occupation.

Two months later, on May 14, 1883 Georg Beller (1855-1900). Georg's occupation was listed as baker. He arrived on the ship Nederland, which left from Antwerp. Georg Beller and Wilhelmine Haufler married in Manhattan, New York on March 14 1885. It is unknown if the couple knew each other in Germany or met in New York.

The third member of the Haufler family to immigrate was Wilhlem Gotlieb Haufler. He was born July 3, 1863 in Marbach, the youngest child of Gottlieb Haufler and Christine Haas. Wilhelm arrived in New York on June 3, 1884 on The Queen, which left from London & Plymouth. His occupation was listed as a laborer.

My great grandfather, Wilhelm Friedrich Georg Schickler arrived in New York on December 26, 1887. He was born November 6, 1873 in Ludwigsburg, Wurttemberg, the son of Gottlieb Wilhelm Schickler and Marie Frederike Haufler. William's immigration record states he was 23, he was only 14. He arrived on the ship Rotterdam from the port of Rotterdam.

William's brother George Paul Schickler (1876-1963) arrived in New York on September 15, 1890. Georg was born on June 27 1876 in Ludwigsburg. He was also only 14 when he immigrated alone. George traveled on the Maasdam probably also from Rotterdam.

At this point it is unknown if other members of either Haufler or Schickler families immigrated or if they did where they settled. These first members to arrived originally settled in Brooklyn, New York so it's possible if there were other members of the families here, they might also be found in Brooklyn
