October - December 1940 from The Calls 1935-1943
Thurs Oct 17. Meeting of the Woman's Society here. Helen and Jerry came to visit for a couple of days.
Tues 22. Edith has had the children help pick up six bushels of walnuts. She spreads them on the ground and runs the car over them to husk them. There are nearly three bushels husked.
Thurs 24. Thelma and the children took me to Arthur's. The next day, Oct 25th Robert Olin and Patricia Sullivan were married at Fenwick, Ont. They were married in the home of the Bride's grandmother, Mrs Eastman
Most of these were at the wedding, - very fine, intelligent appearing. The house was nicely decorated. There was an elaborately decorated wedding cake. Patricia's great grandfather and grandfather were buried from this house. Her mother and aunt were married here, and Patricia was born here. It is owned by Mrs Eastman whose husband was a Lake-boat captain. They are fine appearing Christian people. The Canadian Relatives could not go across the river without a passport, which calls for elaborate arrangements, - now the country Canada - is at war. The great grandmother and three grandmothers were seated together at table. Today Oct. 26 is Mrs Keenan's ninetieth birthday. Mrs Hotchkiss, Arthur and I sent flowers.
Nov 2. Edith had the Le Roy Junior League here for a Halloween Party. Thelma had one for the Stafford League. See Vol II page 71 Recollections.
Nov 5 "Our 56th wedding anniversary. Election Day. Voted for Wilkie. Don't like the man, but don't like Roosevelt's third term, and immense public debts."
Nov. 10 Arthur came and we had a good visit. The next morning he went right to work for us, mostly wiring, - electric.
Nov. 28. Albert Coe was married to Elvira
Dec 1. "A card from Patricia in reply to one asking about maker her rug reads 'I think you're a peach to want to make me a rug' Bob sends his love and so do I"
Marie wrote "The rug you made and which Alden has here, the star shaped one, we have in the center of our living room floor, between the couch and the fire place. It is a perfect spot for it. Every one who comes in notices it and almost all speak of how pretty it is and ask how you ever cut that star so neatly."
"R.O.'s number in the Draft Lottery is 6700."
"Irving Jr came in this morning and asked if I'd mend his mitten. 'Must I mend it now?' 'I'd like it now!' I mended that and another little place and he thanked me and kissed me prettily."
Christmas Eileen, Alden and Marie came, and later Mr and Mrs Fred Bennett, Marie's father and mother. Irving's folks came for stocking's Christmas morning, and we all went to Robert's for dinner. Fine dinner, lots of presents, nice visit.
Robert told me about hid daughter Marie's achievements, and show me some papers she has written. She has been selected as one of the Eastman Oratorical contestants, - the one girl this year. Her speech is The Farmer's Wife. Another I read was about her work last summer overseeing detasseling corn, for seed on her father's farm. Her employees seemed to think her rather strict, and some caller her "Simon LeGree Marie." and had a slogan "I hope that I may never see A boss as bossy as Marie." It was very interesting and full of information as well. She had an article in the Cornell Countryman on Hostelfy, illustrating with their own experience.
To the Grandsons I gave silver teaspoons in boxes I had lined. The four oldest have the four we had of Mother Call's. The other five have one each that were my mother's last and best set. In Charles' memory I gave each of the children $ 5.00, and the grand children $ 1.00 each. He had done this for many years.
