July - September 1940 from The Calls 1935-1943

July 1. Edith took Eileen to Silver Lake where she is be head waitress for eight weeks.

Wed 17. The carpenter, Hale - came and began lowering the ceilings with "sheet rock."

Thurs 25. Evelyn, with Ralph and Elizabeth came, Philip has been visiting at Robert's a few days. We went after him. There were several people there completing arrangements for the Hostel at Robert's. They returned Aug8. One day they went to Silver Lake for a picnic. We called on Miss Danchy, but she was in New York. They went to Niagara. Evelyn, Edith and I were invited to the Applewood to dinner. We had a party for Evelyn Aug 6. We had the twin aunts, the Walkley cousins, Robert's three girls, and Lucille, Winifred Philler McPherson and Rosalind. We were glad she was here, with the children for the Call Reunion at Rosalinds Aug 3. (Pag 70, Vol II Recollections).

Aug 10. Alden's Wedding. (See Recollections Vol II page 70) The morning of the 9th Edith and I started at 8:15 A.M, went for Clara McEwen, then for Eileen at Silver Lake. It was a warm, cloudless day. At Auburn we picked up Mrs Della Jones - Grandma. It was about 6:15 when we reached Mr Bennetts and were welcomed by Alden and Marie., then my Mr and Mrs Bennett, their son Fred Jr, wife and their little son Larry. We had supper with the Bennetts then went to a neighbor for the night, Clara and I and Mrs. Jones. it is a pleasant home and lovely people.

The wedding went off according to correct form and was very nice in every way. After many snap shots were taken, the bridal party received in the church parlors. There was a very large number there, including the Junior Choir, which has been trained by Marie during the past year, and which sang before the ceremony. Marie's Sunday School class, very pretty young ladies, helped serve refreshments to the large crowd. There was a cold drink, ice cream and beautifully decorated wedding cake. The friends lingered at the church quite a while.

Afterward, Edith took Mrs Jones, Clara and me for quite a long ride into the mountains. That was the time we had a banana split for supper, so large none of us could finish it but Edith, who said she "paid for it and was going to eat it.!" After bidding the Bennetts and over night hosts good by, we retired and were ready to start homeward early the next morning. Scenery was beautiful, enhanced by a fog in the morning.

Tues Aug 20. Alden and Marie came. Thelma had a party for them. Edith brought Eileen from Silver Lake.

Thurs 22. Clara invited us folks here, with Carrie, Frank, Jim and Katherine to dinner at Spring Brook inn in honor of Alden and Marie. We had a private dining room, and a very fine dinner.

Sat 24. Lucille invited the relatives, Coe side, to a picnic supper in honor of Alden and Marie. We ate in the Garage, which has been fitted up for a dining room for the Hostel. There were a lot of us there.

"The morning Irving missed his car. Finally concluded it had been stolen. They notified the troopers." The troopers, after a while, telephoned they had found the car, at Randolph, near Jamestown. A fifteen year old boy had escaped from Industry. He has quite a criminal record. Mr Henny took Irving to get it. It was apparently uninjured."

Sun Aug 25. Alden and Marris started for Norris

Wed 28. Edith and Eileen went to Royal Oak. I went to visit Robert and Lucille. Friday Marie Call and I drove to Letchworth Park for Robert, where he had been in a meeting with officers of his company. I felt flattered that he took pains to introduce me to all of his associates there, - a fine looking company of men. We also looked over the fine old mansion Glen Iris, the historic Letchworth home. I believe I particularly enjoyed the visit with Robert.

Sept 3. Irving Junior started school at Stafford. Edith his first teacher. Junior was quite excited, hand trembling. At night, I asked him about school and he like it, said he didn't know what it was like before.
