July - September 1941 from The Calls 1935-1943
Tues. July 8. I wrote "Made bouquets, prepared for the W.C.T.U. picnic here. Too cold to be out doors. A dozen ladies. Had regular program. Lots to eat. Mr and Mrs Walzer stayed a while after the rest had gone. Junior is staying with me nights this week." On the 17, the church Women's Society met here.
Fri 18. The Vacation Bible school has been in session the past two weeks. To-night they had their closing exercises and exhibits.
A.D. Sanders Funeral this afternoon. (See Scrapbook pages 24-27)
July 21-Aug 4. Evelyn and her children visited us. Evelyn and I were invited to Flora Radley's the next day. Charlotte Daniels Miller, husband and son, Thelma, Rosalind and Florence were other guests.
The we, Evelyn's children, Robert's Junior and David to Silver Lake. It is very lovely at the Carpenter Cottage where were can see almost the entire Lake. Edith asked the aunts Carrie and Clara, Evelyn's family and me to spend a few days at the Lake. It was very pleasant.
July 30. We were invited to Carrie's for dinner.
Aug 1, A Luncheon at Lucille's in Eve's honor.
Aug 2, With Carrie and Clara, our folks went to Arthur's to spend the day. "Bertha is having the largest Tourist business she has ever had, as many as nine one night, - which is capacity. We were pleased to go up to Bob and Pat's Apartment, made over Arthur's garage. Very low, slanting ceilings, but cosy and pleasant. "Evelyn and Arthur worked on the revision of the D.A.R. application papers, and took them to Arch Call, Justice of the Peace, to be sworn to. Evelyn took Clara and the children to Fort Niagara."
Louisa went back to Collegeville with them.
Sat. Aug 9. Mr and Mrs Bennett came. Thelma asked us there to supper, then we drove to Silver Lake. "Edith brought us and the Bennetts home. Gasoline is not sold to pleasure cars between 7 P.M and 7 A.M, and Edith was very much afraid she would be out before reaching home. She gave almost a short sigh of relief when we were beside our porch.
Sun 10. The Bennett's wanted to start homeward about noon, so we had dinner at 11:30. Their son came for them. We think they are very find people. Ella Thomas rode with Edith and me to the Lake, - spent some time at the Carpenter Cottage and rode home with Irving.
Aug 11. "Called on Mrs. Walkley, and then on Mr. Torrey. He was in a wheel chair, - very thin and feeble. I was very glad to see her looking as well."
Aug 14. Irving's man Shamp went to Buffalo with a load of oats yesterday and forgot his license. He was arrested for that and for something wrong about the truck. Shamp ran away with his car, said he started for Pennsylvania, but smashed the car. We have been feeling especially sorry for his wife and their six children.
We went to the Fair and stayed to the evening entertainment.
Aug 16. "Bob and Pat" came, at my invitation, and went to the Fair, Friday night and Saturday.
Aug 22. The Robert Call Family Reunion at Godfrey's Pond. Not a very large number there. A lovely spot. (Page 72 in Vol. II Recollections)
Aug 23. We had the Primary Class party here. About fifteen children, with ten teachers and mothers, - and Mr. and Mrs. Walzer.
Sept 1. Labor Day. Our church people harvested the corn planted by them, and sold to the canning factory. "There was a jolly, happy crown from us gray heads to quite small children." Irving, Bob White and Elbert drew it. We had a fine picnic dinner. Mr. Torrey came in Lucille's car for that. I believe it was Mr. Torrey's idea and he has been so interested in it all along. There was quite a reception for him. I believe about $ 300.00 was cleared, - for the church.
Sept 2. Eileen started back to Cleveland this morning, expecting to be at Work this afternoon. Herbert took the bus to enter Le Roy High School. Edith is teaching at Stafford again. She has six beginners.
Sept 6. Esther Spires married in Batavia's Methodist Church. Ruth Harding and a Skelton, who have been going together for years, were married at 8 P.M. in our Stafford M.E. Church. The church was packed.
Sept 14. Edith and I went to Morganville Church Home Coming Day dinner, where I met a number of friends of the Long Ago.
Later, were went out to see Robert, who is not feeling well again. He had been to the Hospital and if the last treatment doesn't help, he'll have to have a more serious operation than he has had. Robert told of an old gentleman connected in business with him who has lived such a good live and been so true to his principles through much temptation that he has been an inspiration to Robert. It is fine to think that is the kind of man he admires.
Sept 14-17. Arthur and Bertha visited us. As usual, Arthur did various mending and improvements jobs. Bertha helped me can pears, peaches, corn. Lucille stopped on her way to Ithaca taking Marie and Elizabeth back to college.
Sept 18. There was a wonderful display of Aurora Borealis, - the finest I ever saw. "When we first saw it there were streams from east toward west, and the big show was in the south. Later, the display was more in the north with streamers and waves of light seeming to converge at a spot just south of the zenith. There seemed to be pink and purple lights also. (Scrapbook p 28)
Beverly Whittmore, who attended to the real estate in Royal Oak, wrote her recently: -- "My Aunt Jane, who knew your mother when they were young ladies" (in Geneesoe Normal 79-80) "passed away Aug 27th, my sister Agnes, her son Wesley and I attended the funeral. Aunt Jane would have been 81 in October. She evidently had a presenting of death, because she asked to be put in a chair and then tidied up that afternoon. Then she said 'I am ready to go now." "Go where?" she was asked. "To the final place," she replied, and three seconds later she was dead. I think that was remarkable.
Sept 21. Robert said - by phone - he has been feeling better than in a long while.
Sun Sept 28. Changed back to Standard time. Le Roy Epworth League opens to-night after summer vacation. Herbert went with Edith.
Sept 30. Thelma and I went to Rochester. I bought needle point and wool to upholster one of the old hair cloth covered walnut "side chairs" bought by father and mother Call about 1875. Began the embroidery. It is for Irving and Thelma. We chanced on Floyd Walkley, wife and little girl at Sears, where Thelma selected wall paper for the parsonage.
