Favorite Photo - The Six Joslins - Week 2 of #52Ancestors
This week's prompt for Amy Johnson Crow's 52 Ancestors in 52 Weeks project is Favorite Photo. When i saw the prompt, I knew immediately what photo I'd be writing about - the Six Joslins photo from 1904.
I first read about a photograph of my great great grandmother Charlotte Joslin Call and her five siblings taken at the 50th anniversary party for Charlotte Joslin and Robert Call in 1904. There wasn't a copy of the photo in my family and I wasn't sure I'd ever see a copy.
When the family gathered in 1904, it was the first time the six siblings were together since the oldest left England in 1852. Going back - let me introduce the family.
Robert Bird Joslin (1801 - 1881) married Mary Ann Adams (1808-1872) in Filleigh, Devonshire, England on 24 May 1832.
Their first child, William, was born on Oct 27, 1832 in Filleigh. William arrived in Boston, Massachusetts on 27 March 1852 and lived the rest of his life in the Boston area. He married Charlotte Blackmore in 1856, and they had three daughters. William died in 1916 in Chelsea, Massachusetts.
Their second child, my great great grandmother Charlotte, was born on May 25, 1834 in Filleigh. She arrived in Boston on May 31, 1854 with Charlotte Blackmore (who married her brother) and her sister Ann. Charlotte married Robert Call on July 16, 1854 in Fitchburg, Massachusetts. Robert and Charlotte had known each other in England. Robert immigrated in 1853, with Charlotte following a year later. Robert and Charlotte settled in Stafford, Genesee County, New York by 1859 when their son, my great grandfather Charles Joslin Call was born. Charlotte died in 1908 in Stafford.
Their third child, Ann, was born on June 4, 1836 in Filleigh. She arrived in Boston on May 31, 1854 with her sister Charlotte. Ann married William Jones on July 2, 1858 in Chelsea. William and Ann had ten children. Ann died in Chelsea in 1918.
Their fourth child, George A, was born in 1838 and died in 1840.
Their fifth child, Elizabeth was born in 1841 in Meshaw, Devonshire.She marreid John Challice on 18 February 1865 and died in July 1886 in Wellington, Somerset. As far as I've know, Elizabeth lived her entire life in England. Two of her four children did immigrate and settled in Genesee County, New York.
Their sixth child, George Adams, was born on April 10, 1844 in Meshaw. George, a Methodist minister, arrived in Boston on January 3, 1881 with his wife Mary, and their two older children. They settled in Wisconsin by 1884, where their third child was born. George died in Madison, Dane, Wisconsin in 1921.
Their seventh child, Robert, was born on September 14, 1846 in Meshaw. He arrived in Boston on April 29, 1874 and settled in Batavia, Genesee County, New York. Robert married Elizabeth Squire there, and they had two children. Sometime after 1910, Robert returned to England where he died in Sticklepath, Devonshire in 1914.
Their eighth (and final) child, Samuel was born on July 4, 1849 in Meshaw. Samuel arrived in Boston on April 29, 1874 with his brother Robert. Samuel first settled in Genesee County, New York where he married Sarah Adams in 1879. By 1882, the family was living in Darien County, Wisconsin. Samuel had two children and he died Darien in 1913.
Now back to 1904 - Robert Call and Charlotte Joslin have been married since 1854 and plan a large golden anniversary party for Saturday July 16. The party was written up on the front page of the Le Roy Gazette on July 20, 1904.
The list of out of town guests included
I know that Ann Joslin Jones is in the front row on the left and Charlotte Joslin Call is on the left. I'm not sure which of the brothers is which - still working on figuring that out. . Thanks to a cousin, the man in the middle of the back row has been identified as George Adams Joslin.
My guess is William is in the back row on the left. He was 14 years older than Robert and 17 years older than Samuel.
As far as I know, this was the only time the six Joslin siblings were together after William left home in 1852. I'm glad they were all able to gather in 1904 for Robert and Charlotte's 50th anniversary. And I'm overjoyed that not only did they have photographs take to record the event but that copies survived and came down through the family.

According to the article "Later photographs of the happy couple, the six brothers and sisters, seven nieces and other kinsmen to the number of forty-five were taken by Wm. Howland of Geneva."
And now fast-forward to the early 2000's and a family reunion where we asked people to bring family photographs. I had no idea what anyone would bring, but I hoped that a copy of the Six Joslins would appear.

Maybe I'd better try to arrange a family reunion to see what photos show up. I've had a little luck from creating surname groups on Facebook and inviting all my cousins and 2nd cousins.
ReplyDeleteI've been thinking about setting up a FB group for an expanded group of cousins. I've got one for my 1st cousins. Any suggestions on how to set up a larger group - trying to figure out if I do groups for each of my 4 grandparents lines? Or just my parents sides? Not sure where the balance is between too many people who aren't related other than through my family versus having too many FB groups to keep track of and inviting people to multiple groups. Got any suggestions? Thanks
DeleteI've created one for each of my grandparents' surnames. Some are small groups 40 or 50, some larger once everyone asks their 2nd cousins and the 2nd cousins children, etc. I put some info here on doing this: https://wehavekids.com/family-relationships/Collect-Family-History
