Memories of the Coes 11: Farm Abundance
Father was what was called "a good provider." He usually bought the groceries, unless it was from wagons coming to the door. There was always an abundance of everything people had in those days, barrels of flour, sugar, pork, corned beef, and sometimes at least a barrel of boiled cider applesauce, with quinces in sometimes, if not always. It was delicious. They say a barrel of sour kraut was made when Mary was sick, but no one liked it and it was thrown away. There were plenty of hams home made, dried beef, sausage, everything. Father kept bees and there was always honey.

During the second half of the nineteenth century, Agricultural and Manufacturing surveys were included as a non-population schedule as part of the U.S. Census. The schedules can tell you what your ancestor grew on their farm.
Albert Coe (1827-1907) is listed on the agricultural schedules in 1860, 1870 and 1880. I thought I'd share the info about his farm - so you can see if you agree with Elizabeth Ann Coe that her father was a "good provider."
In 1860, Albert is listed on line 29 on the 7th page of the Agricultural Schedule for Pavilion, Genesee County, New York. His father Ezra Coe (1796-1869) is listed on line 30. I've listed all the categories on the schedule to give you an idea of what they asked on the census.
