Memories of the Coes 18: Lincoln's Assassination

Like Charles, E.F. has a story to tell relating to Lincoln's assassination. One day father took the family to Uncle Emory's at Union Corners (across from Wesley Chapel.) Then he and uncle Em went to Le Roy. When they returned, E.F. ran out to meet them. They acted so strange, his high spirits were quickly cooled. He thought they must have quarreled, - didn't know what to think. When they entered the house mother said at once "What is the matter, Albert?" Then the bitter news came out, and father cried. What must have been the heartbreak thru out the nation.

________
Patty's notes on this entry

Charles - Charles Joslin Call (1859-1939, son of Robert Call and Charlotte Joslin, husband of Elizabeth Ann Coe). His memories of Lincoln's assassination are including in the post about The Ives Place

E.F. - Ezra Frank Coe (1853-1942, son of Albert Coe and Deborah Prentice. He married Sarah Frances Ward in 1883.

Lincoln's Assassination - Lincoln was shot by John Wilkes Booth on the night of April, 14, 1865, and died the next morning. News likely reached Le Roy of his death that same day. Easter Sunday was the next day, April 16. Given the deep religious beliefs of the Coe family, I'm sure they would have attended Easter services. So it is likely, they learned of the assassination on the 15th since they didn't first hear about it at Easter services on the 16th.
