Memories of the Coes 15: Prentice Family

Aunt Carrie Prentice, dimpled and sweet, married Delos Allen, a Civil War veteran whose health was permanently injured in the war. He had a little farm in Wisconsin. They had two daughters, Eva and Ina. Eva is dead, but Ina is still living, - at Marshfield, Wis., so far as I know. Ezra and I made them a long visit in the early 80s and I thought them one of the most delightful families I ever knew.

Uncle Horace Prentice was in the Civil War also. He was wounded in the foot, and was set to doing clerical work while he was recovering. He was so satisfactory that he was kept at it for the duration of the war. He had been courting a beautiful girl, Jennie Sperry, George Sperry's older half-sister. While he was "soldering" he heard she had another ardent suitor, James Hazelton. He got leave on furlough, went home, fixed the matter up and married her after the war ended. They had two children, Arthur and Myra. He had a furniture business ever since I knew anything about him. He was in Iowa a long tim. For a while in beautiful Skaneateles village, and last in Kalamazoo, Mich. Uncle Horace and Arthur were both successful business men. It was said at one time theirs was the largest retail furniture business in Michigan. Aunt Jennie and Myra had the Influenza during the terrible epidemic, 1918. Aunt Jennie died. Myra lives but is insane- from the disease, as I understand. Uncle Horace was to meet uncle Martin at the World Exposition in Buffalo (1902?) but had a stroke and died the night before. Arthur died with a heart attack. He asked his little daughter to get him a book. When she came back he was gone.

______
Patty's notes on this entry

Aunt Carrie Prentice - Carolina Prentice (1840-1913, daughter of Southwick Prentice (1800-1876) and Betsy Ann Smith (1802-1846) married Delos Allen in 1858.

Delos Allen - Delos Allen (1836-1914, son of Austin Allen (1805-1838) and Eliza Terrell (1808-1883)) was born in New York, possibly in Lockport, Niagra County where his father was enumerated in the 1830 census or in Genesee County where his father's will was probated in 1838. His mother remarried in 1843, and by 1850, the blended family was living in Byron, Fond du Lac county, Wisconsin. Delos Allen and Caroline Prentice were married in 1858. In 1860, 1870 and 1880 they were living in Byron.  By 1890, they were living in Oakfield, Fond du Lac County where they probably remained for the rest of their lives. Delos Allen enlisted in Company F of the 21st Wisconsin Infantry Regiment August 14, 1862 as a private and served until March 7,1863 when he discharged with a disability. As of 1890, he was listed as having incurred a disability in his right ankle and was received a pension of $ 6/month.

Delos Allen is on line 9

Eva - Eva E Allen (1860-1922, daughter of Delos Allen and Caroline Prentice) married Edwin D Warner (about 1860-1887) between 1880 and 1882. They had three children Harold William (1882-1963), Guy Allen (1884-1942), and Ralph Edward (1886-1946). In 1908, Eva married William Butts Rice (1850-1921).

Ina - Ina May Allen (1866-1953, daughter of Delos Allen and Caroline Prentice) married Charles P Billings (1858-1904, son of Charles Billings and Mary) in 1886. They had four children Raymond Earle (1886-1932), Florence M (1888-1916), Clifford Delos (1890-1947) and Crystal Aileen (1897-1967).

Ezra - Ezra Frank Coe (1853-1942, son of Albert Coe and Deborah Prentice)

Uncle Horace Prentice - Horace Prentice (1842-1901, son of Southwick Prentice and Betsy Ann Smith) enlisted in Company K, 10th Wisconsin Infantry regiment on Sept. 16, 1861 as a Corporal. He was wounded at Chickamauga, Georgia on Sept 20, 1863, the last day of the Battle of Chickamauga. He mustered out of the Union Army on November 3, 1864 as a Sergeant. He was listed as being a resident of Byron, Fond du Lac County - where his sister Caroline and her husband Delos Allen were living. Horace married Jennie E Sperry in 1865.

Jennie Sperry - Jennie E Sperry (1842-1922, daughter of Platt T Sperry (1814-1889) and Ann Husted (1812-1848)) married Horace Prentice in 1865. They had two children Arthur Sperry and Almira Ann. While Jennie Sperry Prentice may have had influenza in 1918, she probably didn't die of it, since she died in 1922 and the epidemic was pretty much over by 1920.

George Sperry - George W Sperry (1853-1933, son of Platt T Sperry and Rebecca (1821-1857)). He married Mary Isadore Coe (1851-1924, oldest daughter of Albert Coe and Deborah Prentice).

James Hazelton - possibly James Ellsworth Hazelton (1829-1894, son of Sidney Smith Hazelton and Jemima Hill), who was unmarried and living in Pavilion, Genesee County in 1863 according to Draft Registration records. He married Sarah Elizabeth Page (1836-1914, daughter of Abel Whipple Page and Marian Ransom) in 1866.

Arthur - Arthur Sperry Prentice (1867-1924, son of Horace Prentice and Jennie Sperry) married Nellie Josephine Richardson (1871-1947, daughter of Milan Richardson and Elizabeth Jane Hogmire) in 1892. They had two daughters Earnestine (1899-1972) and Virginia (1913-1992). Arthur Sperry Prentice lived his adult life in Kalamazoo, Michigan. He did visit relatives in Genesee County in 1906, 1915, 1920 (when he took a trip to Pennsylvania with Charles J and Elizabeth Call) and 1924.

Myra - Almira Ann Prentice (1871-1951, daughter of Horace Prentice and Jennie Sperry) graduated from the University of Michigan in 1894 with and A.B. degree. In 1899 and 1900, she listed her occupation as school teacher. In 1910 and 1920, she was living with her mother in Kalamazoo without a listed occupation. In 1930 and 1940, she was living at St. Joseph's Retreat in Dearborn, as one of what looks like a long list of patients. According to the 1940 census, St. Joseph's Retreat was a hospital for the care of the mentally diseased.

Iowa - In 1880, Horace Prentice and his family were living in Mechanicsville, Cedar County, Iowa with his occupation listed as a furniture dealer.

Skeneateles - Presumably, Skeneateles, Onondaga County, New York. While I haven't found any records showing Horace and his family in Skeneatales, according to his obituary, he moved to Kalamazoo from Skaneteles in 1885.

Kalamazoo - In 1900, Horace Prentice and his family were living in Kalamazoo, Kalamazoo County, Michigan where his occupation was listed as Furniture Bank. According to his obituary, the family moved to Kalamazoo in 1885.

Furniture store - Horace and then Arthur operated a furniture store in Kalamazoo from at least 1889 through 1921 based on information in city directories. It was located at 137 S. Burdick Street. Here is how it was listed in 1899 in the city directory.

Uncle Martin - Martin S Prentice (1837-1925, son of Southwick Prentice and Betsy Ann Smith) was Horace's older brother who was living in Pennsylvania at the time of his brother's death.

World Exposition in Buffalo - The Pan-American Exposition was a world's fair held in Buffalo from May 1 - November 2, 1901. According to his obituary Horace had been planning a trip to the exposition in the upcoming week where he would have met Martin. President William McKinley was assassinated at the Exposition on September 6, just two days after Horace died on September 4.

Arthur - According to his death certificate, Arthur Prentice's cause of death was sudden death from apoplexy. If the circumstances of his death were as described, it was probably his twelve year old daughter Virginia who found him. His older daughter, Ernestine was twenty-three and had married the previous year.
