January 1935 from The Calls 1935-1943
On February 16, 1942, Elizabeth Ann Coe (1862-1956, daughter of Albert Coe and Deborah Prentice and widow of Charles Joslin Call (1859-1939)) started a notebook as a continuation of the "History of the Charles J. Call Family". The information is taken from her diary entries starting on January 1, 1935.
I believe this was intended to be a third volume to the "Memories of the Calls/Memories of the Coes" she wrote in 1936 and a second volume of the Memories of the Calls that I don't have a copy of. Rather than narrative paragraphs about different topics that she wrote in the first volume, this volume is strictly chronological with information from her diaries.
My plan is to do a separate blog post for each month between 1935 and 1941 (I know - the title says 1943 - but the notebook ends with information from 1941).
January 1935
New Year's Day, 1935. Twenty three of Our Folks here. Malvern showed moving pictures. Marian Call has just gone to Washington. Charles gave his usual $ 5.00 to the children and $ 1.00 to grandchildren.
Jan 7. Charles made agreement with Genesee Growers for work at Akron
Jan 10. Thelma made me a dress wine silk, trimmed with velvet.
Jan 11. Served Grange. Irving and Thelma chairmen. Everything went smoothly and well. Less than 300.
Sat 12. Finished Edith's cross stitch bedspread. Carrie and Frank here. They plan to go to Florida very soon.
Mon. Jan 14, 1935. Effie M White Call - wife of the late Albert Call, died at 5:30 P.M.
Wed 23. Thelma, Lucille and I tied a comfort for Bertha at her home. to-day. I finished the edge with German knotstitch.
Fri 25. Eileen had a little party. Eleven nice young folks.
Sat Jan 26. Herbert comes over and reads nearly every day. He has finished a Supplementary Primer and perhaps half of a First Reader this week. Edith told how well her pupils were doing, and Herbert came to me with a book saying "Do you know why I am doing this? I know you don't want aunt Edith's kids to get ahead of me."
Tues Jan 29 Bertha and I (and Thelma!) tied comforts for Lucille. Irving and Thelma went in the evening to a meeting of Allied Youth, a Temperance society for young folks.
