Memories of the Coes 32 - Teachers' Training Class

When I was fifteen I went to the Teacher's Training Class at the Academy. I passed the examination for a Teacher's Certificate, but did not receive it, as by this time it was the law that a teacher must be sixteen. By this time Jennie and I had gone to board (ourselves) at Mrs. Shaw's on North St. Mrs. Shaw was an interesting character. She had been a teacher, lost her property and took us girls as roomers to eke out her scanty living. She was intelligent, a very fast talker. I think we never learned any thing, but good from her. Other girls went there later, Lizzie Call, Cora Anderson, and Ida Williams. We were like a happy set of girls. It was not long before some of the brothers, - and others - would find their way there, usually to attend the girls to some entertainment or social.
