January - February 1936 from The Calls 1935-1943

 From 1936 Diary (1936. square of 44!)

As usual, we had New Year's Dinner here. Had twenty three. Lacking were Evelyn's folks, Helen and husband and Alden, eight of them. We had a quiet, pleasant time.

January and February in 1936, seem to have been quite uneventful. There was much bad weather. Jan 22 at night was very bad, very cold, the roads were filled with snow. Edith did not get to school the 23-24. "Mon. to Fri Jan 17-20. Very cold, part of the time blustering. Schools did not hold Wednesday-country schools and some children were marooned from home by impassible roads." "Lucile Torrey's husband Arthur Haynes died Jan. 17, after a year's illness."

Eileen was taking music lessons of Mrs Miller, Fridays after school.

Charles and Irving wired for Electricity a house near Akron, Mr Doktor's

Charles prepared for a banquet for the Akron Growers, and wrote and figured on the business of that and his other interests. He worked our furniture, repairing old pieces.

We canned half a beef, 54 qts, and 14 cans of soup.

Early in March we canned 12 qts of pork, dried out lard.

We washed Tuesday's, including Alden's laundry, and calculated to have it ironed and mended so it could be mailed back Thursday, and used the following week. I had Mrs. Louise Bridges Berger help me half a day a week until she got steady work in Le Roy. I like her very much.

Irving and Mr. Browne, pastor of the Morganville church, gave addresses at the annual W.C.T.U. supper at Morganville, Jan. 16.

Thelma went to Farmer's Week for part of the time.

Jan 12. Carrie and Frank were here to call. Katherine has high blood pressure, and ailments so the doctor told Jim he needn't expect she would live long. Doris, Clarence's wife has been to California to visit her mother and other relatives. She was gone only three weeks.

I worked on Our Memories, wrote for Charles, pieced blankets of samples, two for Evelyn, one for Bertha and one for me. I worked on bed spreads, candlewick in red for Ralph, Blue for Philip, and an applique for Louisa (see diary March 11, Feb 11)

Had a new black coat $ 20 with gray fox collar
