Memories of the Coes 33 - Parties

Our parties, then as now, were held on Friday nights. The members of our familys never went to dance or card parties. Those in the neighborhood who were always included were the Van Deusens, Emily (mother of Clare Wilson, Le Roy), Will, Jennie (Mrs. Frank Gillette) and Frank;, the Laurences, Addison who became a famous auctioneer going to many states and to the Cornell sales, - Frank, now prosperous in Niagara Falls, -  he married Ida Bovee of Fort Hill, - Spencer very promising, a lawyer who killed himself at the beginning of his career, perhaps on account of ill health, - the Laurence cousins, Charles, Hiram and Almira, The Millses, Carrie and Will, Will Martin, The McE??, Will and George, brothers, and Kate (William), Nettee (Harris) Will, James, John and Peter and Duncan, Lettie Pratt, Sarah Ward, and Will Stowell. Of course, school friends, relatives, and others varied this list

March 1936. I have now filled this book. I hesitated about continuing writing by have been enouraged by the interest of some of the children and grandchildren, and think I will go on Volume II.

Patty's notes on this entry

No dancing or card parties - Many early Methodists practiced outward holiness which often meant wearing of plain and modest clothing. They also avoided "worldly" habits such as playing cards, dancing, gambling and attending the theater. They often devoutly observed the Sabbath and abstained from alcohol.
