Albert Coe and Deborah Prentice Family Photo - August 24, 1899

Every now and then, as a researcher you get lucky. My family has had a photograph of Albert Coe and Deborah Prentice's family of Le Roy, New York for years. We were pretty sure the photo was taken in 1899 - based on who was in the photograph - and who wasn't.

And then this week - the pieces all came together when I realized based on a note in the local newspaper that the photo was most likely taken on August 24, 1899 by C.J. Brooks of Le Roy at a Coe family reunion.

From the Le Roy Gazette, August 30, 1899 page 1

Pictured in the photograph are

Albert Coe (1827-1907) and his wife Deborah Prentice (1833-1910). They lived in Le Roy, Genesee County, New York

Their children and spouses

Mary Isadore Coe (1851-1924) and her husband George W. Sperry (1853-1933). They lived in Pavillion, Genesee County.

Ezra Frank Coe (1853-1942) and his wife Sarah Frances Ward (1856-1941). They lived in Le Roy

Elizabeth Ann Coe (1862-1956) and her husband Charles Joslin Call (1859-1939). They lived in Stafford, Genesee County.

Clara Addie Coe (1864-1950) and her husband James Daniel McEwen (1861-1901). They lived in Wichita, Sedgewick County, Kansas.

Carrie Evelyn Coe (1864-1948) and her husband Frank Lincoln Walkley (1867-1961). They lived in Le Roy

And their grandchildren

Clara Evelyn Coe (1886-1972) daughter of Ezra Frank Coe and Sarah Frances Ward

Charles Arthur Call (1885-1962) son of Elizabeth Ann Coe and Charles Joslin Call

Edith Alberta Call (1889-1989) daughter of Elizabeth Ann Coe and Charles Joslin Call

Charles Albert Coe (1890-1978) son of Ezra Frank Coe and Sarah Frances Ward

Harold Daniel McEwen (1892-1963) son of Clara Addie Coe and James Daniel McEwen

Robert Vincent Call (1892-1961) son of Elizabeth Ann Coe and Charles Joslin Call

Evelyn Clara Call (1895-1962) daughter of Elizabeth Ann Coe and Charles Joslin Call

Fred Rosamon Walkley (1895-1981) son of Carrie Evelyn Coe and Frank Lincoln Walkley

Albert Coe Walkley (1896-1983) son of Carrie Evelyn Coe and Frank Lincoln Walkley

John Donald McEwen (1897-1984) son of Clara Addie Coe and James Daniel McEwen

Clarence Willard Walkley (1898-1983) son of Carrie Evelyn Coe and Frank Lincoln Walkley

What no one knew at the time the photo was taken that this would be the last time all five children of Albert Coe and Deborah Prentice and their spouses would be together. James Daniel McEwen and his family left Le Roy for Wichita on August 30, 1899. He died on August 4, 1901 in Wichita, having not visited family in Le Roy again. While his widow Clara Addie Coe and his sons visited family in Le Roy regularly in the years that followed, they remained in Wichita where James had been a successful merchant.
