Mid February through Early July 1937 from The Calls 1935-1943

Feb 16-20. Henry Hahn papered living room, our bed room, dining room and den ceilings. I painted our bedroom. Later painted part of living room also the kitchen.

March 4  Edith bought her Ford car of Mr. Ward Hunt our friend at Akron. Blue and silver. Irving and Thelma asked Louisa what color she would like for a new car. She would like "pink or red." Herbert inspected aunt Edith's car and said "aunt Edith's is very nice, but he was considering brown."

March 9. Irving ordered a Ford car also of Mr. Hunt.

March 11. Charles put extra shelves in the china closets, a great improvement.

April 3. Began a little outdoor work. Carrie and Frank Walkley returned from Florida this week.

April 11. R.O. has thumbed his way to Washington (D.C.) where he is visiting Helen. Marian is there too.

April 26, 1937. Charles and I started on our long-anticipated trip across the continent and up the west coast. We had talked of it for years but never seemed to be in a position to go until now. Edith insisted we use her new Ford car for the trip. I certainly enjoyed it and felt as much affection for it as one seldom does for an inanimate object. I think they felt more or less apprehension for us, at our age starting on so extensive a trip. If I could have relieved Charles of part of the driving it would have been better but fortunately, he seemed to really enjoy driving. Of course we were in no hurry but as was natural often rode further than we intended to. The children who were near enough came to bid us good by - and we started off with high anticipations, and hopes which were more than fulfilled. Carrie went with us to Wichita, where we were lavishly entertained by Clara, her family and the Beacheys. I kept a pretty full account of our trip in my journal for 1937, marked Trip West, which has been very interesting to Charles and me. From this date to July 2 inclusive I refer you to that.

July 2, 1937. We went to Elyria O to see Mrs. Gordon who was so good to Mary and George where they both died. She spoke very lovingly of them. I asked if George left enough to her to pay for the care she had given them and she said he did. Then came the time of unpacking and getting settled again.
