September & October 1937 from The Calls 1935-1943

Tues. Sept 7. Schools began to-day.  Edith is teaching in Stafford. Louisa began school  and is in Edith's room. Herbert is in the 5th grade, in Miss Clara Rudolph's room. Thelma asked Alden and me to go to the Rochester Exposition. Irving went also. We saw what we wanted to in 1 1/2 hours. Then went to the Rochester Museum, which I really enjoyed.

Thurs Sept 23. Spoke at our Ladies' Aid on our Western Trip. "I talked about the people we met and read extracts from some letters."

Sun. 26. "Irving is trying hard to get the Church finances all made up right." Edith put up lunch, even to church, and took Alden back to Ithaca. He has been working for Geo. Berger.

Mon 27. At night Edith and I went to Akron then to Hunt's Corners where "they have been celebrating the Centennial of a church, - Baptist. A Hunt was pastor for 40 years and built the present edifice. This was the last of a series of celebrations, a banquet. They prepared for 400 people. Mr. Roscoe Hunt invited us and introduced us to many."

Sun Oct 3. Conference is in session at Rochester. "Quite a good many young people went to see Mr. Miller ordained.

Mon. 4 Edith was called up and told that the cadet teacher who has been helping in her room has infantile paralysis, - Miss Randall of Le Roy. Janice Walkley's hired man had it at this time. We knew of no cases infected by these two persons.

Fri 8. Charles  and I were aske to speak at Grange. He talked about farming in the West, I told "why we'd like to have all our friends take the trip we did, and reasons why. For recreation - we saw new people, Indians south and north; Mexicans, Chinese, - old friends and relatives; Wichita, - former Stafford people, the Pecks; we lived in a different manner, short periods we stayed with friends and relatives, tourist houses hotels, cottages or camps, a tent at Yosemite. Nature's wonders and beauties; Flowers and palms, - Grand Canyon, - indescribable grandeur; Beautiful Yosemite, a valley, cliffs, falls, river, lake, Indian legends and relics, oak and pine trees, deer and bear. Yellowstone geysers, hot springs, lake, river, falls, bears. Great Salt Lake 25% salt. Man made wonders, Boulder Dam; bridges, Bay and Golden Gate. Most beautiful, - the mountains. Teton, Hood, Rainier, San Dea; trees, Sequoia, Redwoods, Pines, Since our return, reading is more interesting. Memories The Tetons, morning ride in the Redwoods. Mist drifting over hills and mountains." (The bears on the Runner road.) "So we should like to have our friends go soon, so there will be more chances to go again, and perhaps yet again."

Sat 9. Charles took the old furnace from the cellar with some other things to Arthur in Niagara Falls.

1951 Oatken Year Book, Le Roy, New York. Ancestry.com

Thelma - Thelma Louise Keitel daughter of Herbert P Keitel (1880-1957) and Mary R Fancher (1885-1980). She was married to  Irving Joslyn Call

me - Elizabeth Ann Coe daughter of Albert Coe (1827-1907) and Deborah Prentice (1833-1910) She was married to Charles Joslin Call.

Rochester Exposition - In 1937, the Rochester Exposition was combined with the Monroe County Fair. There was also a large horticultural exhibit scheduled at the same time. The events took place at Edgerton Park between September 6 - 11.

Irving - Irving Joslyn Call, son of Charles Joslin Call and Elizabeth Ann Coe. He was married to Thelma Louise Keitel.

Rochester Museum - Established in 1912 as the Municipal Museum in Rochester, it is now known as the Rochester  Museum and Science Center.

Geo. Berger - George Henry Berger (1890 - 1968) son of Frank Berger (1869-1920 and Clara Bell Wilson (1872-1948). In 1940, he was listed as owning a painting and paper hanging business in Stafford. He was married to Louise Ann Bridges (1892-1959)

Mr Roscoe Hunt - Roscoe William Hunt (1887-1978) son of  Charles M Hunt (1852-1897) and Mary Sparling (1858-1949). He married Maude Danser (1888-1969). In 1940, he was a farmer in Newstead, Erie, New York.

Janice Walkley - the only Janice Walkley I can identify is Janice Walkley (1923-1986) daughter of Clarence Willard Walkley (1898-1983) and Doris Donnan (1897-1957). In 1937, she would have been 14 years old - so unlikely she had a hired man. It is possible that she is the Janice Walkley referred to - and that the hired man is someone working for her in the 1940s - who had had infantile paralysis in 1937. The memories I'm transcribing were probably written in about 1943 - so I'm not sure if even then Janice Walkely would have had a hired man.

Charles - Charles Joslin Call son of Robert Call (1831-1913) and Charlotte Joslin (1834-1908). He was married to Elizabeth Ann Coe.

Arthur - Charles Arthur Call (1885-1962) son of Charles Joslin Call and Elizabeth Ann Coe. He was married to Bertha May Hotchkiss (1882-1946). In 1937, they lived in the Niagara Falls area.
