November & December 1937 from The Calls 1935-1943

Nov. 3  Thelma teacher of the Miller Class.

Nov. 5  Our 53rd Wedding Anniversary. We went to Castile to Charles' dentist, and to the Pavilion Church supper. When we got home Irving's folks were here and the children greeted us with "Congratulations! Congratulations! "on your 53rd Wedding Anniversary!" Thelma had bought three lovely great chrysanthemums and the card was inscribed "With sincere wishes for many more, - also thank for your many kindnesses. Irving, Thelma & Family." Had a box of Fanny Farmer candy from Florence Radley, and cards from Jessie Avery Man and Mrs. Chas. Weaver.

Nov. 10 "After school Edith started at once for Kenmore to bring Ezra and Sarah. Carrie asked us all to come there at night, as the boys had given her a birthday surprise for the past five years.

Fri. 12. "Charles and I went to Grange. After a while the Master asked the Stewards to conduct Mr. and Mrs. Charles Call to the Master's desk. I was completely bewildered and carried the towel I was stitching with me. He presented us with a lovely basket of flowers, white and gold chrysanthemums and snap dragons, in honor of our (beyond) golden anniversary." I have a snap shot of the flowers and the ones Irving's folks gave us. Some one said the Master referred to the "companionableness" we seemed to enjoy. A long word but I think it is appropriate.

Tues 16  E.F. and Sarah went to Florida with a lady who was driving down.

Thurs 18  Charles and I were asked to speak of our trip at the Batavia Wesley Class, Arthur's name heads the list of four teachers on the class program. Mrs. Hawks is class president. Eva Holmes Rafter was there, a member of the class, who was in the Le Roy G.S. when we first went to Le Roy in 1873. She is three days older than I. She spoke of how proud my mother would have been of Arthur.

Thurs 23. Charles and I started the drive to Evelyn's. On the 24th we stopped at Pottsville and visited a coal mine. In my second 1937 journal I have a very good account of this experience, pages 60-63. We stayed at Evelyn's until Dec. 1. Charles helped where he could,  - sorted corn was one thing I recorded, and went to N.J. and New York City on business. We women pieced blankets, Evelyn made me two dresses, I worked some button holes, Mrs. Hankins and I marked sheets with chain stitch initials, had callers, went to town, etc. A very pleasant visit as usual. There was ice on the pond Thanksgiving Day, and skaters. "It was deer hunting season in Penn., and we saw deer on trucks and hanging in yards. We were amused when three troopers stopped us - at the State line, looking for venison. Father told the first one that we had no meat of any kind; but another came up and saw the back of the car full of stuff, and he looked more carefully. When he stopped looking, father wanted to know if we could proceed, and said 'Are you satisfied?' We all laughed and went on

Dec 16-17  Our Christmas cards have a picture of the house and part of the garden after an ice-storm. Thelma took the picture and attended to having them printed.

Dec 25. As usual, Irving's folks came over to empty stockings. We all had lots of nice presents. Then we folks here went to Robert's for the day. Had a fine dinner and a very nice time.

Dec. 26  Had about 70 Christmas cards, and several letters. The letter I was most excited about was from Doris Pafres. She and her mother were two of the kindest friends we had in Wichita.

Dec 31. Watch night service here. Icy and bad. Few came. Nearly all played games in the dining room. Near midnight had a simple informal watch night meeting.
