Photos of People in Evanston, Illinois and at Northwestern University - c 1915-1916 - pages 10-13

I'm very lucky to have several of my grandmother Evelyn Clara Call's (1895-1962) photo albums. And perhaps even luckier that she labeled many of the photos - so I know roughly when and where they were taken, and who was in the photos.

My grandmother attended Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois in 1915-1916, and then Cornell University in Ithaca, New York from 1916-1919.

The photos on pages 10-13 are photographs of people. From the people I can identify and based on the location in the album - my guess is they were all taken in Evanston, Illinois. People are probably connected to Northwestern University where my grandmother was a student. Photos were probably taken between 1915-1916.

In 1915, Mrs Robert G. Piper earned a degree from the School of Oratory. This photo of Mrs. Piper may be of her.

Elsie Fuller Green (1890-1977) daughter of John James Green and Medea Ella Fuller earned a Liberal Arts degree in 1913 at Northwestern University. On August 19, 1915, she married Robert G. Piper in Ludington, Mason, Michigan. According to a report in August 21, 1915 edition of the Saint Joseph Michigan Herald-Press, Robert Piper died of tuberculosis an hour after the wedding. In 1920, she married Ira Edward Westbrook.

Helen Stinson

Helen Waite Stinson (1890-1977  )  daughter of Edwin Stinson and Martha Shread of Little Falls, Herkimer County, New York. She received a diploma in oratory from Northwestern in 1916 (1916 Northwestern Commencement program at Internet Archive). In August 1918, she applied for and received a passport to travel to France and England to work for the Y.M.C.A. Canteen Services. Her passport application includes letters from the War Work Council of the Y.M.C.A. discussing that she had been hired for a year to work for the National War Work Council as a secretary for service to the troops of the American Expeditionary Force in France (U.S. Passport files, Ancestry.com). She returned to the United States on the Saxonia on August 25, 1919 (U.S. Passenger lists, Ancestry.com). In 1920, she married Bernard W. Shaper (1890-1973) (California Marriage Records, Ancestry.com). She died in 1977

Ida Belle Downey & Helen Stinson

In the 1918 Northwestern Yearbook, Ida Belle Downey is listed as a student in the Oratory department. She was from Cincinnati, Ohio and had a B.A. from Swarthmore. From this info, I found Ida Belle Downey (1893-1988) from Cincinnati, the daughter of Isaac Downey and Sarah Raney. In 1919, she married Ernest Roe Zink.

Dr. Robert McLean Cumnock (1840-1928) founded the Northwestern University School of Oratory in 1878. He began teaching at Northwestern in 1868, and taught there until his retirement in 1913.

Miss Farrell

According to the Northwestern Course Catalogs, Julia Beth Farrell taught Instruction in Voice and Play Presentation in the School of Oratory at Northwestern. In the 1904 Evanston City Directory, she lived on Orrington Ave and was listed as a teacher in the School of Oratory. In the 1912 and 1914 City Directories she is listed as boarding at the Greenwood Inn, located at the corner of Hinman Ave and Greenwood.

In 1927, a Julia Farrell Whitely, former instructor at the Northwestern School of speech died in Evanston. If this is the correct Julia Farrell - then she is Julia Beth Farrell (1878-1927), and wife of Arthur Laurence Whitely (1875-1945), engagement announced on June 6, 1918 in Chicago (Chicago Tribune, Ancestry.com). In 1920, Arthur and Julia Whitely lived on Hinman Ave in Evanston (1920 US Census, Ancestry.com). In 1923, he applied for a passport indicating he planned to travel to Europe with his wife Julie B. (US Passport Appplications, Ancestry.com.)

According to the 1916 Northwestern University Summer School catalog, Laura Lee was the Instructor in Physical Training in the School of Oratory.

In 1911, she applied for a U.S. Passport. I can find no records for Laura between the 1916 catalog and her death in Los Angeles in 1955.

Mabel & Clara

Mabel Addie Lindley earned a diploma in Oratory at Northwestern University in 1916. After an exchange of emails with Mabel Lindley's descendants - they have confirmed that this is Mabel Addie Lindley in the phot.

Mabel Addie Lindley (1886 - 1968) was the daughter of Alphonso E. Lindley and Alice Dimmick  . After graduating from Northwestern, she was the State Contest Trainer for the W.C.T.U. in Kansas. In 1920, she married Herbert McMillan and in 1925 she married George Copeland.

Clara A Bratland was born in Trempeauleau, Wisconsin in Feb 1895. No parents are listed for her in the birth index. In the 1918 Northwestern yearbook, she is identified as coming from Blair, Wisconsin which is in Trempeauleau county. The only Bratland family I've found in Blair in this time period is the family of Albert Bratland and his wife Millie. In 1905 and 1910, Clara Anderson b 1895 in Wisconsin is living with Albert and his wife. In 1900, Clara A Anderson, born in Feb 1895 in Wisconsin, was living with Ed Anderson and his wife Lena - listed as their niece. In 1930, a Clara Bratland born in Wisconsin in 1895 was living in Minneapolis. In 1940, she was living in Evanston.
