September & October 1938 from The Calls 1935-1943
Sept 4-5. Wm Weaver came as a tourist and asked for lodging. I looked at the nice appearing elderly woman and saw Alice Pratt Weaver! Was glad to see her, and we visited quite a while before bed time. They stayed to breakfast. - Labor Day - Wm starts teaching again tomorrow in a High School where he has taught five years. An unusually fine appearing young man.
Tues 6. School began. E teaching at Stafford.
Thurs 8 "Charles came soon after noon. He has been doctoring for a cold all the week, 'sore spot in chest and a cough.' I put on a mustard plaster at his request and then another on the skin which reddened it."
Fri 9 Woke at 12:45 A.M at a short but strange cough of Charles! His breathing was short with a catch in it, - quite annoying. I put on some clothes, got some onions from the outside cellar so made onion syrup and cooked an onion poultice, fixed doses of medicine and then asked Edith to come down and see what she thought of him. He did not feel bad at all, and she thought we need not worry as long as he had no temperature. We had the doctor come - Dr. Davis - and he said the trouble was from his heart, and he must be very quite, stay abed. He was not as quiet as I would like, as there was telephoning he seemed to have to do. He has felt comfortable.
Sat 10. Mr Ward Hunt and Mr Arthur Byers came to see Charles and arranged business affairs. Mr Hunt has been working with him all the fall, and knows just how to go ahead with the business. The doctor came, said he was better but 'we'd have to sit on him, yet.'
Arthur and Bertha came, bringing E.F. and Sarah. Clara had invited "the girls" to luncheon at the Robert Wood. There were 12 including E.F.
Sun Sept 11. Several callers. Lucille said Robert felt very bad when he heard his father was sick, but said to me, he'd rather hear he had heart trouble than a cancer.
Mon 12 "Doctor came. Said Charles was better. Still keep quiet."
Thurs 15. "The doctor came. I took it that Charles can do just about as he has done before, only not hurry and not do heavy lifting and things old people should avoid doing. He said quite a little about that - old people giving up hard work."
Sun 18 Marie expects to go to Cornell Thursday
Sat 24. Edith and Eileen started for Ithaca. I have carried Charles' breakfast to him on a tray since he was sick.
Tues Oct 4. "We went to Batavia and saw Dr. Davis. I told him I wished he would tell us everything he knew about Charles' trouble. He did not tell us anything that alarming. If he begins to pant he must rest until he gets over it, also when he has the bad feeling in his chest. He can do anything that does not over tire him."
Sun 16. Visited E.F. and Sarah yesterday, then to Arthur's at night. "They have made a lot of improvements since I was here." "Jerry is a darling pretty, dimpled laughing, always on the go." We called on the Hayes'es at Wilson where he preaches. Mrs Hayes is in a State Hospital in Buffalo. "Ten years ago she had trouble, and has had at intervals since."
"Robert O. returned yesterday from a trip across the Continent and back." Bertha counted she has had 170 tourists, 4 more to-night. She enjoys the work very much, and has paid for the new furniture she has bought. Thing the house is very pleasant."
Sun 30. Charles and I went to church, and were quite impressed by the new minister, Wm Walger.
Mon 31. Edith had her scholars here for a Halloween party. I enjoyed it all. They were lively and active. Pretty as well as funny costumes.
