July & August 1938 from The Calls 1935-1943
July 3. Clara, Harold, Evelyn and Joanne McEwen stopped a few minutes then went to Carrie's and called on relatives on the McEwen side.
Mon. 4 "A Coe-Walkley-Call family picnic was held here. All the Walkleys but Floyd's folks were here, but most of the rest of us, about 45. Harold and wife have bought a 250 A. farm 13 miles from Dallas, Texas, which they are fixing up very fine." Irving's folks came with a few fire works.
Thurs 7. Robert Olin is helping Irving with his green peas. Irving has 36 Acres, and threshes for neighbors.
Wed 13. Ella Thomas visited me. Thelma took some shap shots of us together, - at Ella's suggestion. After taking her home, we called on Mrs. Grove and Miss Nellie Danchy's. They live together. Nice visit.
July 16. "Clara, Edith, Chas. and I rose early, and went to Niagara Falls. We were at E.F.'s for breakfast, a very nice one, at 8 A.M. Then we went to their beautiful Church. I tried, by use of their telephone-like instrument, - to hear the sermon, but I couldn't get it. Then we went to Arthur's to dinner, E.F. and Sarah also, about 14 of us. Started for home about 4, with Elizabeth Call and Bob Johnson, whom we left at Robert's.
July 23. We had our Call-Joslin Re-Union at Robert's. There were 53 there.
Thurs 28. Had our party in Clara's honor. Harrises, Walkley's and Calls, all ladies.
Sat Aug 13. Edith, with her aunts went to visit E.F. and Sarah. They rented a cottage or cabin, and kept house there.
Thurs 18. We have 8 fine old walnut chairs, some Coe, others Call, whose cane seats were gone. Edith has caned 5 of them. I three, this summer. Seems as tho I have worked in the garden about every morning this summer, and often in the afternoon! Charles has helped me too.
Sat 20. The big barn on the adjoining Leyman-Bissell farm burned. It happened about 4 P.M. It is thought that a spark from the blower set the straw afire. Irving was unloading hay close to where the fire started. It very soon became one great blaze, a brilliant but dreadful sight.
Sat 27. Lucille invited the Coe relatives to a party for Floyd and family. I believe there were 38.
