November & December 1938 from The Calls 1935-1943
Fri Nov 4. Charles is trying to sell the Pembroke Farm. He went to see a house in Buffalo offered as part payment. Found the house in question was satisfactory, but the buyer-to-be had changed his mind. It was a pleasant trip.
Sun 6 - Charles and I went to the Le Roy Methodist church. Rev. Mark Kelly spoke. He officiated at the funerals of both Father and Mother Coe, and performed the marriage ceremony for Arthur and Bertha in 1909.
Thurs. Nov. 8. Election Day A great deal of interest in Governor Lehman, who has had the office three times and in Dewey, popular young attorney. Also, the new state constitution was voted on.
Sat Nov 26, Mable, Archie's wife' entertained in honor of Donald's wife, from 3:30 - 5:30. There were lots of Calls. The bride's mother and two sisters were there.
Wed 30. E.F. and Sarah started to Florida with a man driving down. Charles killed 30 hens. Thelma came over to help. She picked about 24, then came in and dressed 19 or 20 before dinner. "She is a clipper."
Sun Dec 4. Mrs. Amy Hall broke her hip yesterday
Wed 7. Charles unloading fifth and last car of coal for the season.
Tues 13. Charles and I started to visit Evelyn and family. We enjoyed the lovely drive, as we always have. Mrs. Hankins broker her hip and is so helpless. They have been lifting her in and out of bed, to sit in a chair awhile, but it hurts her badly. They have a girl who spends a good share of her time waiting on Mrs. Hankins.
Thurs 15. Charles did quite a lot of walking, and too fast. The doctor came to see Mrs. Hankins, and Evelyn asked him to look at her father. He found his heart was skipping beats at an alarming rate. He told him to keep very quiet, and to com to his office for a thoro examination.
Fri 16. The doctor gave Charles an examination "putting him" he said, "thru all sorts of gymnastic exercises." The doctor found him much better than he expected. Mrs. Hankins has a doll that was given her, dated about 1900 they think. Evelyn has had it at a "doll hospital," it is all fixed up and has material to dress it. It is a beauty.
Thurs 22. Charles sent for and paid for electrical materials to wire the hen house, and has begun work on it.
Sun 25. A happy Christmas with Evelyn's Family.
Mon 26. Had 14 young roosters killed and we canned them. There were 28 qts. Frank was home, and "The men went at the wiring in the P.M."
Wed 28. We planned to return home to-day, but the weather and the road reports made Charles decide to wait. Edith telephoned, and said it was very icy home, and they didn't want us to start. - Evelyn is secretary, and charter member of the AAUW - American Association of University Women - and had over 100 cards to address and fill out to the members of her circle.
