January - April 1938 from The Calls 1935-1943

Jan 1. There were just 22 of us at our New Years gathering here.

Jan 2. "Eileen returned to College. Before she went she kissed me, thanked me again for her presents, and said she thanked me again for all I did fixing up her clothes before she went in the fall, - that she often thought "Grandma did this for me." Her nice words made all the day brighter for me." - And other days also.

January seemed a very quiet month for us. The first part was icy. Think we were home much of the time. I began a Scrap book with pictures and maps of our Western trip. Charles selected the maps and marked them.

Feb 27. Our new refrigerator, Coldspot came from Sears & Roebuck. Church night. Edith led the singing very capably. Mr and Mrs John Gardner presented a very nice program.

Feb. also was very quite. Charles figured, went to Farm and Poultry schools. I mended, sewed, embroidered.

March 18, Worked outdoors, trimming vines, and cleaning front of house. First robin.

March 28, "Charles' 79th birthday. We had the Bible Class, Mr and Mrs Torrey and the Mrs Legg, Hall, Mortimer Nicholson, Ware. Then Irving and Thelma, Edith, Charles and me. Edith led in a couple of games. We had ice cream, birthday cake made by Thelma, date cake, pineapple and chocolate dressing and cashew nuts.

April 5. Louisa has the mumps

Mon 10. Mr Herbert Harding died about two, this morning. Later, we heard that Bertha's father, Mr Horace Hotchkiss, died about the same hour at his home in Silver Spring.

Mon 18. Edith had a vacation, and went to work at once painting the bathroom, ivory and light green.

Fri 22. Ezra and Sarah came, just back from Florida. They look well, and stood the journey fine. They stayed a few days. E took E.F. to Rochester the 30th.

29-30. Robert brought me rose plants, 10, I think, Mother's day present. Charles helped me plant them.
