May & June 1939 from The Calls 1935-1943

May 7. I wrote "R.O. expects to join the army as a musician. - Charles has worked at Akron some. I have had young Chas. Cone help some at garden work.

May 21. Mabelle Goff invited us three to dinner. We "enjoyed it all, - nice dinner, hundreds of lovely tulips, - the pleasant house, nicely furnished, - and pleasant conversation."

May 30. "Alden started for Tennessee."

May 31 "There has a lot of road work been done on the 'North Road' just east of this farm."

June 2. "A party of six" (strangers) "came to the garden where I was working, and I dug plants again. Edith got her sign up last night. The lady of the party said 'These' (the Olympia poppies) 'are what made us stop' She said "This is the best part of the trip.' I was astonished when I found they were overnight guests."

June 6. Charles and I went "to Mr and Mrs L.S. Reed Golden Wedding Celebration - At Home - 4-6. There were quantities of flowers and people coming and going - very many - but few we knew. Mr. Reed's 76 birthday."

Thurs 8. We, Charles, Edith and I were invited to Mr and Mrs Carpenter's, the Le Roy M.E. Parsonage to dinner. Mr C and I walked around the grounds which are very pretty. The old horse sheds have been removed and he wants to plant shrubbery in the vacant place.

Fri 9. Charles and I went to Grange.

Mon 12. I have clipping and other account of Charles' death and funeral in Recollections, Volume II, pages 52-69. I am very glad I do not have to copy that as it has been exceedingly hard to write - what I have concerning his illness.

Thurs 15. Evelyn took E.F. and Sarah back to Niagara Falls, and we visited Arthur's folks.

Sat 17. Evelyn started for home, Collegeville, in our old Dodge car.

Mrs Elizabeth Adams, my faithful friend for many long years, died after a long and painful illness.

Mon 26. Eileen cam the 21, went to-day to a Girl Scout Camp at Sodus. Edith had a school operetta, and picnic the last day of school.
